No extenders but the 360 support H264 WTV files...
By The way.. is that WTV converter out yet? Windows 7 has been out for a while now.. any ideas? I wanna see these claims..
Anyone who has used it, does it just change the container to something compatible or does it do an all out conversion of the video and audio?
Does anyone have a link to a site that shows the specifics of the WTV format?
Looking forward to this being released - I've been on the edge of ripping my DVD collection and was leaning towards MKV but might go WTV after reading this. What I'm looking for is an easy way (not nesc technically but I have 500+ dvd's so basically once it's setup, a fairly scripted method - one (or two) click and let it go method) to rip the movie and include the multiple audio streams (I'm a big commentary fan - important to be able to retain them) and the subtitles (I have to mute the audio often and subtitles are vital)
Since I need to retain subtitles and multiple audio tracks in one file and most of my computers are Win 7 setup with 360's as extenders, WTV seems to be the ideal candidate as it handles the subtitles automatically when muted and is easy to switch audio programs from within the interface it for me edges out MKV (plus I've yet to find a fairly automated way to rip to MKV with multiple audio tracks and subtitles)
Does this sound like something that DVRMS Toolbox will be able to handle?
Thanks
Chy
Hi Max. Do you know how to use graph edit? You can dump the audio and video streams with dvbportals HDTV dump filter. http://www.dvbportal.de/ You can then remux those streams into a m2ts with tsmuxer. I assume you want to work with non protected wtv files.
Also, I edit my WTV files directly with Microsoft's Expression Encoder. You can try it for free. You have to re-encode the file to WMV, but if you buy the $50.00 version you can encode to both WMV and MP4. It's not well known because finding where you can buy the $50 version from MS is terribly done by them. I've linked it for you. Most people can only find the FULL Expression Web 3 for $150
MrNorthHi! Thanks for your replies, this is a long awaited tool! I still don't understand about the subtitles. Wtv is a container format a lot like mkv right? It has binary streams for video and audio. And the ability to store multiple audio tracks and subtitle tracks. So, if an mkv has two subtitles, why not simply read them, do whatever change in format so it fits the subtitle format used by wtv and create the wtv file? If we don't have the wtv specs, it should be possible to referse engineer an existing wtv file with multiple subtitles. Once the wtv is created properly, it should be no problem to change the subtitles using the windows 7 media center gui. /Henrik

I've been using DVRMSToolbox to convert my MKV's to WTV so that they show up in Recorded TV and work with FF/RW, and it's all great, except none of my converted files have thumbnails. Does anyone have any idea why this might be happening?
Hiya!
So this tool is not out yet?
I wish I could be of assistance when it comes to the subtitles because right now we are really handicapped since I save my mkv files with both swedish and english subtitles, and switching between different subtitles using the remote is not possible. WIth wtv and a way to convert srt subtitles into the stream would be a blessing. Then I can choose the tracks from the menu just like when playing a dvd.
Anyone skilled in this want to give it a try? You will be loved!

Hi, sorry if I missed these details in the thread, but I've been adjusting to having a newborn in the house since Aug, and, well, I'm still a bit out of sorts still. I'm looking to see if I can do the following, and I'm only looiking to see if it's worth my while to follow-up, not detailed instructions.
OK. My set-up is two 7MC's recording lot's of Nat Geo, etc. I have everything copied to a WHS share, with more than enough capacity to allow for archiving with abandon. However, there are limits. Plus, about 25% of recordings are DRM'd, so watching on a random machine, I have a 12.5% chance of getting confronted with a "Copy Protected" diss.
1) convert MPEG-2 wrapped .wtv to h.264 and then re-wrap in .wtv with metadata to keep displaying in native 7MC Recorded TV
2) Have DVRMS tools ignore DRM'd content and simply just deal with my current reality. i.e.I don't want the software to try and convert that special on the Yeti which stops after 2 mins and then get's deleted because it's been processed. Currently, reading the metadata for known DRM's recordings with things like WTVwatcher (assuming it's correctly reading the metadata) don't accurately indicate DRM present based on the "Protected=Yes/No" field.
Thanks in advance
AndresE None of the WTV files made using this process will work on the Linksys extenders. They will work on the 360 though. Would Windows 7 transcode the WTV with h.264 on the fly for the linksys extenders?

I have a linksys extender and they support H.264 with AAC 2 or 6 CH in a .mp4 container will only output 2 ch even if 6 ch is available unless you have something with a digital input that supports 6CH AAC
this does no transcoding so plays at the full quality of the file, i'm not sire what the max bitrate is for the linksys extenders though

Any update on when Ben is going to release the profile of MKV to WTV conversion for movies?

Damn I've read the entire thread and I'm confused.... So
1. Is this supposed to be a new peice to dvrmstoolbox by Andy, or just a profile by Ben?... or both?
2. Is it out yet?
3. Will the converted .wtv files (yes, low bit rate) play on my dma2100's or not? This is my biggist question. I don't have a 360, just three dma 2100's and 100's of .mkv's
I don't know if the files will play on your dma extenders. i use 1 dma extender and have opted to use mp4 after looking through many forums like this for information on what the dma extenders will play natively for example they won't play DIVX but will play XVID natively due to licenceing issues i find the .mp4 files with x264 video and AAC 6CH audio made by handbrake work perfectly on both mce and my dma extender. if you need more info try looking at the product specs on the linksys website.
