erkotzCabal Seconded. General availability will probably be by Christmas at the earliest. The above is 100% wrong. There's nothing further I can say on that. The card is already in at least one reviewer's hands. What I really don't get is in in one thread we'll have people saying that Ceton (who already has had their beta program and has stated a launch date) isn't going to launch till year's end, in other threads we'll have people speculating that SiliconDust might launch in early summer (which is 100% impossible). Throwing darts at a board would be more accurate than most of the speculation in other posts.

Basing production run on pre-orders may be ill advised. In this market, a lot can happen in 3 months: My cable company may add 25 HD channels or may go out of business. Microsoft may add a new extender or may drop Media Center altogether. Sage 7 may be released with a slick new UI. New drivers for the HD-PVR may come out that are rock solid. I, for one, won't spend the money until something is definite, and I certainly won't commit myself to Ceton and my cable company by pre-ordering a first-run device three months before its available.
I really hope that Ceton is a smashing success. There is no better way for MC to recieve some level of mainstream attention than an internal device (or external ala silicondust) that can be used with an existing computer along with an extender or RVU alliance integration. As long as there are no more delays they will most likely get my money.
But a lot can change in 3 months that Ceton may or may not be prevy to.
rjairam It almost looks like some people want Ceton to fail because they like Silicondust for whatever reason better.
If Ceton doesn't do well and the cost of certification isn't reduced from the current $200,000, they may never see a Silicondust device. They have to be watching the market very closely right now to see if they made the right decision. So far nothing outside of the breadboard tests at Cablelabs in February and if the Beta for April is on schedule, they should be making up a 100 or so test units right now.

No one want's Ceton to fail. I have been waiting since 2004 to get my hands on cable card type device for PC. I can wait. Thing is, if device was to be released at March 31 2010 than there would be enough time to produce enough tuners, work out any bugs that will be discovered when the device gets into the hands of real testers (us consumers) and be ready by NFL season. What I am trying to say is that there will be problems once this device comes out and you do not want to be BETA testing in front of your wife when the next season of shows starts.
Do not get me wrong guy's. I will get one of these when they come out.

I agree. May 31 still gives me all summer to build a pc and troubleshoot issues with my system before the fall season of television and football begins. Missing 2 episodes of burn notice is not exactly on the same level as not being able to catch week one of the nfl season. However i will say that I will be using my tivo to watch the world cup if it comes down to it.
I think Ceton will be a big hit. The company seems dedicated to making a good product. There is room for Silicon Dust, Ceton et al to make a poduct.

I agree completely, but some people apparently want SD to be the only ones making a CC tuner. It's almost like a fanboy thing like what happens with Apple products. I think there's room for everyone and I'd like to see not only Ceton and SD but also others like Hauppauge and AVermedia too. Maybe even ATI/AMD if they want to get back into the business.

excellent point. I just hope that ceton pushes the market to a point where multiple players can carve out a place for themselves. I saw somebody say unoficially that there were somewhere in the range of 6,000 pre orders for the Ceton tuner. This is a good start but if you listened to the engadgethd podcast with one of the owners of Ceton you could sense that the number of pre orders was good but that they have a really long way to go before they break even.

I dont think people want SD to be the only company making SD tuners. I think the "fan boys" you talk about are a bunch of people who have been burned to many times by this or that new tuner that now sits on a shelf because it doesn't work right. Hardware is only as good as the drivers for it in whatever operating system you are using. SD has stood by their product since it was first released and continues to update it.
I have pre ordered a couple of the Ceton tuners and am praying that they will offer as good or better support then SD does. I have hope, but only time will tell.

I was talking to Hauppauge yesterday and asked them about a cableCARD tuner. They said there had been a mis-quote about their plans. They were only looking at it, not designing or planning at this point. I mentioned the new National Broadband Plan and the new regulations aimed at CableLabs and they agreeded that would make things a lot easier and reduce the number of units needed to get to a break-even point.
Let's hope Ceton's success and the new regulations break this market open for not just cable tv but sat as well. There is no reason that DirectTv and Dish should enjoy a closed system anymore.

Am I not a real tester? I'm not the only one either - I know of several more outside of Ceton and I'm sure there are others I don't know of.
For what it's worth, at one point, the Ceton folks called me "Kryptonite for MOCURs" which is a good thing, I have been smacking the Ceton InfiniTV around for about 9 months now and have been helping make it more stable. There have been times my TV shows "failed to record" so yours hopefully won't because of the fixes put in place due to my failures

Satellite companies are not subject to all the same regulations as cable companies, because local government agencies are not granting satellite companies local monopolies like the cable companies get. Nor should they be.

The FCC indicated that all "Cable-TV-Type Services" (Cable, Satellite, UVerse, etc) are being included in the propsed plan. This is a good thing in my opinion.
