The windows team just announced SP1 details on their team blog:

They mentioned a lot about remote desktop protocal changes in both 2008 server and service pack 1.  I need to read more about it, but it does sound like it could hold some promise.

A Service Pack is a large roll-up release of many hotfixes and patches for stability and security. The R2 is completely different and adds additional features to the Operating System. I hope this helps.
