Thats what i was worried would be the case, but I dont blame them since they are trying to sell an ecosystem, not just one small hardware device.

Thats where i was hoping 3rd parties like netgear would offer up something that could access these various platforms to share media.

It always comes down to UI though doesnt it? lol  At this point, Im accepting of the fact that there is no perfect UI, just variations on average lol.  Now if they allowed custom themes on something like the netgear, then your talking.

They do offering themeing and customizations to the standard player ui. I just don't use it so not real familiar with it but it is pretty customizable. Remember you also get a free trial of sagetv to try as well.

Can someone provide information based on experience with the sage extenders and placeshifting? This seems like a great feature and I would like to know how smooth is it and what would I be missing vs a local connection?

Can I plug it into a broadband connection anywhere and watch my tv with my interface without lag?

From what I read it works really well check out geektonic. I haven't used this yet but plan on it soon. With a placeshifter license I understand you just plug in and access everything remotely (although I read native DVD doesn't work remotely but not sure if that is pc only or extenders as well) A post in sagetv placeshifter forum would probably yield a Better answer.

Also, keep in mind that the performance will not only be based on the network connection where you SageTV server is but also based on where you connect remotely

     Plucky,

One more question for you.  My wife is used to using the Media Center remotes.  Is it possible for Sage to use these remotes on the extenders?

I haven't used one personally but I am told yes.

The dream. I just want a box the size of the new AppleTV. Win7 Embedded, Ethernet, HDMi, power connects and a remote sensor on the front. Let MC box trans-code current and future codecs etc... How hard can this be, seriously.

I apologize if I missed this answer above/and/or/ if this is simply a dumb question, but, here goes... Can the sage extender access a tuner from a WMC? I'd love to set up a centon on a WMC, and connect via the Sage as a MCE.

Babgvant has written a program that will allow a Ceton tuner to be used inside sage sort of. Basically you can schedule recordings and watch recordings (that are drm free is the important part) inside sagetv. It ques up media center to record them and then changes the container so Sagetv can play it back. There is no livetv (for cablecard) or no WMC interface inside a sagetv extenders.

So while there is a hack or workaround for cable card it is not ideal. We are hoping for native support but who knows. At this point I am 100% happy with my hdpvr rock solid for months now without issue (in fact less issues than I use to have with the r5000 mod boxes I had).

    cheers.

    Hey Duck ;-),

Are you running SageTV on any of your PCs (either as a Media Center or as a Client)? If so can you confirm that SageTV 7 does not support subtitles currently (I know it does for the HD300 in extender mode but I get no options running MC on my desktop and don't have a client license to test out)

What format material? all mine are native rips. I don't rip the subtitles on my dvds so I can test them what other ones? If you have a sample file I could test it.

Heard back from Andy (his quote below).

PC clients do not support PGS subtitle, but they do support external subs (I use SRT), and with an additional filter (http://babgvant.com/files/folders/sagetools/entry13677.aspx) will work with SRT in MKV as well.

You should also be able to use ffdshow DXVA w/ PGS but I've never tested that.

A knock for SageTV right now, surprised that they would be missing such an important feature for many. Of course the good news is that subtitle support for the HD300 works as expected

Yo Plucky, I saw your sig you are running 360's for extenders. By any chance are you streaming any BD or HD-DVD content? I'm still trying to find a way to get quality HD-dvd rips into a format that is stutterless over a wired connection on the 360. N/m I just saw you were running Sage TV...

I need to change my sign. ;) I still have one xbox to test wmc every now and then. What you just described it the main reason I switched to sage. Their hd extenders handle native rips and hd audio. I tried several mkv and others types in wmc I could get it stutterless but only when I deceased the bitrate and lost quality. Why you still can't stream native unencrypted rips is beyond me in wmc every other player on the market can do it.
