I saw the rack mounted, 8 tuner model (not sure which was that was) on a video from CES 2009.  That model is designed for commercial installs like hotels and such.  I think the Silicon Dust rep said was around $5000.

Does anyone know what the Datacast model is used for?

Hotels and large organizations such as schools. 8 Tuners and the ability to multi-cast the TV out. You can also lock a tuner into a channel - say, 1 tuner = NBC. Any users in the building connecting to that channel use the same bandwidth and only 1 tuner.

Which  hotels are using this?  Love to visit and try that out...

Yep - this is also increasingly used for IP Ringmain TV viewing in offices where workers need to monitor multiple TV channels, and previously analogue RF ringmains were used to feed separate TVs.  Classic example is TV Newsrooms - where journalists often have access to hundreds of video sources at their desk. (The classic analogue "ROLEC" system feeds a pair of RF cables to each receiver box, allowing twice the number of VHF and UHF channels to be viewed)

IP Ringmains can be a good solution for this - as they use the PC and existing IT networkd and don't require extra RF cabling and TVs.

However some operations are setting up their own DVB-T/-C internal ringmains and transcoding DVB-T and DVB-S off-air broadcasts instead (as cheap DVB-T/-C set top boxes or portable TVs can be used) - as in some cases a separate TV is easier to watch and manage - as some applications (like editing) don't work well with separate video monitoring windows - and adding a second PC display is often more expensive than a 7" DVB-T LCD.

Which one is the encryption version and what will it do?  Or, has it not been released and is not on their site yet?

    Thank you.

Does anyone know when the DVB-T Version will be released? And if so, will it be release in Europe or compatible in Europe?

    Thanks.
  •
Supposedly imminent release and will be compatible with and released into the UK.  Would be great to have a DVB-S2 version...
  •
    Defintly. Thanks bdo.

So let me get this straight. If I have one of these connected to my network, and I have two Vista Media Centres on the same network, they will share the 2 tuners correctly.

What i mean by that is, that if one computer is watching a show and recording a show (thus using both tuners) and then someone on the other computer tries to watch TV, will VMC tell you that the tuners are both in use or will it just steal the tuner from the other computer???
  •
From what I have seen so far, if both of the tuners are in use by one machine, the other machine will receive a no signal message.

  •
Ok, so if you had four tuners (2xHDHomeruns) then would it be smarter enough to use the next available tuner??
  •

Different versions of Media Center support a different number of tuners. In this case 2x2 digital tuners. Some versions of Media Center will only support up to two digital tuners.

In my experience vying systems using an HDHomeRun will simply take control which can cause problems. However, users can manually assign primary and secondary tuner designations.

If you have two HDHomeRun units and two systems though you can configure which tuners go to which system within the Media Center setup program.

In my case I have xxxxxxxx80, xxxxxxxx81 and xxxxxxxx78, xxxxxxxx79 where 80 / 81 belong to system1 and 78 / 79 belong to system2. Therefore there is no competition for tuners. One could also configure one tuner for four systems with no competition for tuners. Or some other config,...
