Well in case you guys didnt read xbox.com, they have a full list of whats going to be included in the spring update and TWO things cought my eye:
    • H.264 video support: Up to 15 Mbps, Baseline, Main, and High (up to level 4.1) Profiles with 2 channel AAC LC and Main Profiles.
    • Added MPEG-4 Part 2 video support: Up to 8 Mbps, Simple Profile with 2 channel AAC LC and Main Profiles.
Now Jess and Noah, i know this is not your area..but can you please ask around redmond and see if we will be able to play these codes on our extenders(MCX) or is it just for being played on the 360 dashboard

    thanks

I'm checking...I think I do know the answer but I'm confirming that a) I'm allowed to say it and b) I'm correct. :-)

Yeah so I was right on both.

This announcement was made in regard to the dashboard; not though Extender. So at this point, this support is being added for video playback via the dashboard only.  We will consider supporting these formats within the Extender experience as part of a feature release in the future (no, no dates, no promises, blah blah, but the Extender team knows of your interest in these features).

do you by any chance if the dashboard itself supports divx with this new update? :)

it says mpeg 4 simple profile is supported, but divx is mpeg 4 advanced simple profile

Everyone knows we want H.264 and MPEG-4 support in MCX.  I look forward to the hypothetical feature release, and hope such support is provided in the near future.

I appreciate that the capabilities of the Xbox 360's dashboard may have little (if any) technical bearing on which codecs the Extender supports.  Offering such support from the Xbox 360 dashboard without adding similar support within MCX seems, well, as confusing as touting PIP support in 360 IPTV while not offering it in MCE.  Devil [6]

The official news, here, doesn't mention MPEG-2.  It sounds as though there will be a separate HD-DVD update, though I doubt that'd incorporate MPEG-2 changes.
  •
it's suppose to according to some blog news..   mainly cause theres no support for a variety of audio formats with mpeg2 and there are now unplayable hd-dvd titles because of it.. especially band/live performances

Point taken. I'll pass it along.

Thanks for the clarification.  But I have to say, a MAJOR dissapointment.  What does it take to get the XBOX/MCE/ZUNE teams to talk to eachother? How can the codecs be installed on the XBOX, but the MCX not recognize them?
