That is great news that you (MS) is working on a solution for this.  Are you able to give any rough (non-quotable) ballpark on when this solution may be available?
  •
Well, I'm glad to here you got it working, worse comes to worse native support via svc pack, you can reformat. Jess may be putting together a step by step for me now :)
Will amazon ever ship my HDPC-20?

No, I can't share a timeframe at this point...and I'm not putting together a step-by-step of how to do this other than to share via the Video Gallery, since it's not supported in Media Center and I don't give out info on how to do unsupported things. That's what the community is for. :-)

OK, thanks anyway for the heads up that it is coming some time in the future.

Is it possible to get a step by step on this?? Vista Home Premium to Vista Home Premium 2 Way share.

If I get time I will do a step by step setup for Vista Home Premium users (the one without gpedit) sharing recorded TV between two Vista Home Premium's , using just the Registry .

Folow Mikes process,@ http://thegreenbutton.com/blogs/mike/archive/2007/01/12/158079.aspx but instead of using Gpedit use the registry for Vista Home Premium .

    Using Vista Ultimate.
"Network access: Shares that can be accessed anonymously"

    Using Vista Home Premuim.
Run regedit go to and add "Recorded TV" to that list.
    HKLM_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanManServer\Parameters\NullSessionShares = "Recorded TV"
this does the same thing as Gpedit in the picture above.

For Network access: "Do not allow anonymous enumeration of SAM accounts and shares" in gpedit.
    use HKLM_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\RestrictAnonymous = "0"  in the registry set the Dword = "0"

I have setup my Vista Ultimate machine just like it was described here : http://thegreenbutton.com/blogs/mike/archive/2007/01/12/158079.aspx

I have setup my premium machine like this:

  • Click Start and type regedit.exe into the search box and hit enter.
  • Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
  • Expand SOFTWARE
  • Expand Microsoft
  • Expand Windows
  • Expand Current Version
  • Expand Media Center
  • Expand Service
  • Click on Recording
  • Create a new Multi-String Value by right clicking in the right pane and going to New.
  • Name the new value "WatchedFolders" (without the quotes).
  • Double click on WatchedFolders and enter the path to the share on the remote Media Center machine, ex. \\computername\Recorded TV
  • My vista home premium still does not see recorded tv on the ultimate machine.

    Both machines have dual tuners.

I have the pc's members of the same workgroup not in a domain, could that be the problem?

    Thanks

I have got this to work to the point that within WMC I can see the recorded tv shows all neatly organized with thumbnails and all the information regarding the show.  Problem is:  I go to play the show(s) and I get a Disk Error, telling me to close and try again.  Both the machines are running Vista Home Premium.  Anyone have any thoughts?

    @ mobly:  this:

is a typo.  It should be \\computername\Recorded TV (backslash, not pipe.)  Also, that assumes that the share name on the folder (note that this can be different than the folder name) is, well, Recorded TV.

@ SNLONG:  it sounds like you either didn't do both of the Registry changes for anonymous access, and/or you didn't give the NETWORK SERVICE account full control on that folder.

I assumed that was a typo.  I did both of the registry changes (and rechecked many times).

The full control of the Network Service Account may be the problem.

Now when you say Network Service Account control, are you talking about the Security on the permissions for the Recorded TV (ie, Anonymouse Logon, ehstart ect).  I have everything under this permission wide open.  Maybe I allowed to much "Full Control" and it is screwing something up.

I am a very inexperinced hacker.  I am working from a "follow the directions" point of view.  So, sorry for the dumb questions.  The majority of this stuff (regedit) is way over my head.  I believe I have pieced together this somewhat confusing (and cotradicting to a newby) Thread to get where I am now.  It is interesting that I am so close.  I really belived I had it solved.

In any event, thank you for your sugestions, I will check my work again.  I really admire you guys (and gals) who know what all this stuff means!

Dosen't it seem that it would be in Microsofts best interest to right an aplication that you could download that would change all this and make it work?  It seems that with a few things tweaked, MCE could grab a large share of the tivo market.  They could also have more people promoting their product and give people a reason to upgrade from XP.  It Looks like they have actually stepped backwards and many people are "not going there"

Anyway, on a positive note, I set up my sons X-box 360 (as an extender) at christmas without any problems or reading any instuctions.  I kind of stumbled onto it accidently as I was also building a new computer an puting Vista on it.  I got a bit curious and within a very short time it was working very well.  Anyway, I thought it would be cool to put Vista on my notebook to take advantage of MCE (I never utilized it w/ XP) and that is were I am today.  A bit frustrated and confused but learning alot.

H itook me a couple of days to look at this... problem is I dont have a NullSessionShares in parameters? And in LSA restrict anonymous is already zero. How do I create the NullSessionShares? Help much appreciated....

    Cheers

    Nick

  •
nick, you're running Home Premium, yes?
If that reg key doesn't have the NullSessionShares value present, then you can create it:
With the \Parameters key selected, right-click in the right-hand pane > new > DWORD value.
Name it NullSessionShares, and enter the value data as directed earlier (by Richard.)

This is a little OT, but if you also have a WHS in the mix, Brent has come up with a great app (TV Manager), that moves recordings to your server and you can see (in real time)/watch/delete these recordings from any pc on the network.  It is still in beta, but it is a great solution.

I'm not sure why all the work. As long as you know how to share folders between your two pcs the Recorded TV will show as a regular video, until you set up a tuner on the shares pc. If you don't have a tuner, borrow the tuner from you other pc for 5 minutes, set up the tuner, add the recorded TV folder of the main pc as watched folder and everything shows up right in the second pc. Take out the tuner. It still works.
