When trying to record a TV Series using the Record Series options and also just random recording of TV programs WMC will stop recording before program ends at random. I do not get any error it just stops recording. Also recently as it stops recording the sound dies. I can usually reboot during commercial break and start the recording again, sometimes it will continue on through the rest of the program other times it will quit recording about every 10 or 15 seconds. Storing on a 500 GB internal HD with 220 GB free.

    System Info:
    Windows Vista Ultimate 32 bit
    Intel Quad Q6600
    3 GB RAM
    EVGA 260 GTX Video
EVGA NForce 750i SLI FTW MB
Hauppauge WinTV-HVR 1800 PCIE TV Tuner using Cable connection.

Can anyone offer a fix for this please?

    thanks

Look in the event viewer for media center and see if there are any errors.  That should give the community somewhere to start..

I just repaired a system last week with the exact same symptoms plus a few others.  The other system had problems with the short recordings on the drive as well.  He lost the ability to fast forward as well.  Upon hitting the 30 second skip button, the show would just go to the end of the recording and show the blue done screen.  His problem ended up being drive related.  His hard drive is failing and after a format of the recording harddrive everything works now but I am sure the problem will resurface untill he gets a new drive.  If you have another drive I would try switching the recording to a different drive and see if you can get through a recording.  If that works, then try to format the recording drive and see if thats gets you back working.

Good luck and let us know.

Ok, well I changed the recording drive to a different one and tried to record a game today and got the same type of error.

Warning - Recording of NBA Basketball began late on 05/03/2009 14:28:01 due to a temporary failure caused by either a system malfunction or a power loss and was stopped due to a lack of audio/video data. Another recording attempt will be made.

Warning - Recording of American Idol began late on 04/22/2009 19:58:01 due to a temporary failure caused by either a system malfunction or a power loss and was stopped due to a lack of audio/video data. Another recording attempt will be made.

I didn't want to think the drive was failing, it is fairly new and has shown no other signs of failing. Is there anything else it could be?

    thanks

Are you able to use the 30 skip function in any of the partial recordings?

What time was that NBA game scheduled to start?  It looks like nothing was recorded at all.

The owner of the system I repaired also refused to think it was the drive.  It was a 4 month old 1.5 Tb.    While I was looking through his system, I remember what lead me to the drive.  The format type had somehow changed from NTFS to RAW.

If you are using the Seagate 1.5TB drive, there were some drives that shipped with a problematic firmware.  Seagate later released a firmware update to resolve the problem.

The game was to start at 2:30. It start recording but the previous game ran long. It recorded for 13 minutes and only about 3-5 minutes of the actual game I had set. There were about 4 other peices but they were less than 10 seconds each. Sorry I am not sure about the Skip 30 your refering to but I was able to use the fast forward function on the 13 minute recording.
On the recordings on the American Idol series I have recordings that are anywhere from a few seconds to 90 minutes of an hour to sometimes 2 hour show.
The File system still registers as NTFS.

    thanks

The drive is a Seagate but it is only 500 gig.
It is a ST350032 Sata drive.

    thanks

I upgraded to Windows 7 RC1 clean install on a seperate HD and was able to complete the recording. At least on this first attempt.
I'll see if it continues. :)

Funny, I had the same problem.... In the case of my system I kept receiving the power loss misc error. Eventually the drive disapeared all together from windows. Luckily enough for me Fry's had a Samsung 1TB drive for 80 bucks. I went over bought two and called it a day.

Well I guess I need to look into that. Same thing others have advised. I thought it had stopped by upgrading to WIndows 7 but it just happened again tonight. Although I did get an error this time that told me my TV card had stopped working. So who knows

    thanks

The actual error on this one incase someone has a clue is:

    "LOW BIT RATE
The tuner hs stopped captruing data. Make sure the tuner is installed correctly and the software drivers are up to date. If the problem persist restart the computer and try again."

This was after I had go our and upgraded to the drivers for Windows 7 for the TV card and video card.

    thanks
