Frank Windows 7
I was also excited unti lI read that it won't work on x64. I really wouldn't want to go back to x86 now. I could really use an outlook plugin though - not so bothered about email but contacts, todo and calendar would be a godsend.
Regards
I'm in the same boat... lack of x64 bit kills this for me. It looks cool but its time to move on to x64, especially with x64 becoming common in vista, Win7 and Server 08. Any work arounds or ways to force this to 32bit compatibility?
I tried this on my Windows 7 32bit Ultimate (RTM) system and it doesnt work... Same error everyone else is getting with 64bit RTM releases. I'm using Office 2007 Enterprise with the required CDO componant. I'd call this one broken in RTM as well. I'm attempting to setup Outlook with my Exchange account. I havent tried it with a pop3/imap account but either of those would defeat the syncronized calendar features the plugin aims to provide. Does anyone have this working?
Actually none of the OABSOFTWARE packages for Windows 7 work... I'm not sure what happened between Beta/RC and RTM but it appears to have broken quite a few plugins.
Hi all.
Frank was so kind to bring this thread to my attention (and he sent us a donation, by the way, which we appreciate very much). So I'd like to respond to some of the things mentioned here.
It is indeed a limitation of the way extenders work that the Outlook plug-in cannot be used on an extender. When you specify your e-mail accounts (with the Mail icon in the Windows Control Panel), the settings you enter are stored in the registry, but only for the user that enters those settings. When you use Media Center on your extender, the extender logs in under a different user account, that is created when you first connect your extender to your Media Center PC. And we haven't been able to find a way to make the settings work under such an account. And please believe me when I tell you that we made quite a number of attempts and did a lot of searching before we gave up on this...
Then the 64 bit issue.Outlook until now is a 32-bit application. And the library that our Outlook plug-in uses to access the information stored in Outlook (the CDO library) also is a 32-bit library. When you run Media Center on the 64-bits version of Windows, the Media Center application runs as a 64-bits process. Therefore, when you would start our plug-in, that would also run as a 64-bits process. But a 64-bits process cannot call a 32-bits library. That's the reason you can't use the Outlook plug-in for Media Center on a 64-bits version of Windows. This may change when Outlook 2010 arrives. But we'll have to wait and see....
I hope this clarifies things a little.
I'll ignore the remark that none of our plug-ins work on Windows 7 because that's pure nonsense. We're using all of our plug-ins ourselves on a number of Windows 7 machines (both 64- and 32-bits), as do thousands of other users; and I can assure you they run very nicely!
Kind regards,Oebele(OABsoftware, The Netherlands)
OEBELE - Thank you for the follow up comments regarding the issues surrounding the 32bitvs 64bit constraint with your plugin (regarding Outlook) - those make perfect sense given the issues with how outlook stores registry settings.
I do however sincerly doubt that your plugins are running on Windows 7 RTM, I tested nearly all of the OABsoftware plugins on both Windows 7 RTM 32 and 64bit and simply put none of them work. Every one error out when attempting to activate within the application library. NOW - I may be doing something wrong here but if so - why not provide a better guide or manual rather than claim that its pure nonsense. I've installed them according to the manual provided and non of them work. I'd be happy to post back here if someone can show me that they work but thus I haven't seen a post yet where someone has installed your Plugins with RTM and been sucessfull. I've found numberous plugins (including other vendors) that worked just fine under Beta or RC but are broken in RTM - ie the real version of Windows 7. Claiming your software works with 'Windows 7' isn't exactly true if you've only tested on Beta or Release candidate versions of the software since changes are made and things can ultimately break in the final version (clearly).
I work for a software development company myself and understand the need\want to support a new operating system, heck I even sent you guys an email and offered to assist with testing RTM versions since you seem to be having probems with it but no response (other than the post above). Let me know if you have any advice or if you have a different manual for use with RTM versions of Windows 7.
Thanks,Andrew
Hi Andrew.
Since the moment the RTM appeared on Connect, we've been running all of our plug-ins on Windows 7 RTM and I can tell you they run just fine.If you are having troubles, not only with our plug-ins but with a lot of other 3rd party plug-ins on your RTM installation as well, my best guess would be that something went (terribly) wrong in your setup.
Is the PC, that you're installing the plug-ins on, connected to the internet?Could you please PM me some screenshots of the errors you get when our plug-ins "error out"?
Kind regards,Oebele.
Oebele,
My Windows7 Installs are generic MSDN downloads from my valid MSDN subscription - all installed on very capable hardware (C2D/C2Q with 4GB Ram) and havent had any issue (other than OEBele plugins). I've included a screenshot of the Outlook Plugin Error. As indicated in an earlier post I'm using Outlook 2007 with Exchange 2007. Let me know if you would like any further details to assist with troubleshooting these issues.
Well, this one is pretty easy to solve: you have to install both Microsoft Outlook and the CDO library on your Media Center PC (as clearly stated on the website, by the way). You'll have to buy and install Microsoft Outlook. The CDO library, that our Outlook plugin uses to access the information stored in Outlook, can be downloaded from the Microsoft site, right here:http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=2714320d-c997-4de1-986f-24f081725d36
