Its annoying - I cannot seek through a movie I'm watching on Media center like I can with media player.

Is there something I shoul be doing that I'm not, some patch - Or besides the one that comes with Windows 7, is there really absolutely no way to seek?

Ok, so I never got a replay to this... I'm trying to make Media center my all-in-all player for movies, music... maybe even games...

But apart from the aforementioned issue, I also don't seem to be able to play many AVI files that play without hustle in Media player... Don't they use the same codecs?

Is there something I can do to get such AVI files working like all the others? Cuz it sucks that I can play only some of my movies and for some, I need to exit the player and use other players... Any chance of getting say, a codec for real player files also?

    The simple answers is:

Even though Microsoft originally marketed WMC as a "one size fits all" media solution,
in a real world, user environment, it is NOT and NEVER has been.

WMC will flawlessly play many media formats, but it is far from perfect and may or may
not play certain files even if you have the proper codecs installed. That's just the way it is.

And it gets even less flexible when it comes to trying to play media files on a V1 extender
    (MCX)

So my suggestion to you is to just "get over it", because there's nothing you or anyone here
on TGB can do to change things.

What I have found is that the latest version of DivX (version 7) will play pretty much
anything you throw at it, with the exception of H.264 files which to me is kind of odd
as it's represented as being able to play them.

What happens on my system is I first get an error message stating that I need "direct show"
for audio processing and then they play without audio. Now once again, the odd part of it
is: before I installed the latest DivX codec, I could not get H.264's to play at all & now they
play fine in WMP , but NOT in the standalone DivX player.

The point I'm making is this: we live in an amazing time of technological advances but not
everything works as it should. So, my approach is rather than banging my head against a
wall, trying to force something to work, I figure out which players/decoders/codecs work
(& look) best with each of the media types I wish to play & then I designate that preference
as the "default" by using the "open with" command from the right click, context menu & call it
    a day!

    Just my .02, YMMV

    Works OK

or this one for Vista: http://damienbt.free.fr/index.php

I think you'll find that installing the haali splitter in addition to DivX7 lets you play h.264 files. The problem is that DivX7 only decodes AAC audio and most h.264 files I've come across are AC3.

I agree. Installing Dix7 should solve the AVI problems. Thats what I use.

    Hi dmagerl,

Thanks for the tip on the haali splitter, I sensed that I needed some other component,
to make my H.264's work, but wasn't quite sure what to use.

Since I have WMC working nicely right now, (I've lost count of how many times I've
needed to rebuild my system since 2006) I usually hesitate when it comes to
experimenting with codec packs or other decoder add-ons.

Example: I know that FFDShow is perhaps one of the most popular and usefull codec
packs available, and typically helps decode the most troublsome of media files, but as
soon as installed it on one of my previous builds, I found that my system was never the
same (& eventually led me to rebuild)

I steer clear of ffdshow too. It doesnt make use of hardware acceleration and it is hard to set up. With DivX7 & haali splitter, my cpu utilization sits somewhere around 5% when playing mkv files.

Thanks for the tip on the seek Ok, here's the exact issue I have with file types I just discovered the beauty of .mkv files - Issue is the one I have, which I was hoping to be the first of many, runs alright with the CCCP codec pack (Never tried it without) both media player and media center - BUT, it goes out of sync, especially when I skip. Any solutions there Also, regarding other file types such as avis that play with media player and not media center, can anyone give me a point by point breakdown of what exactly I should do to fix this if there is a solution at all... I'm really not techy so I couldn't get alot of the advice in the previous posts

    Any help on this?
