Quicktime (.mov) in Win 7 RTM

I've read various pre-release articles saying that .mov files should play in Windows 7 out of the box. However this wasn't the case for me and I had to install the shark007 codec pack. Was Quicktime support dropped from the RTM?

.mov files from my digital camera now appear in the "related videos" section of my photo folders (Pictures+Videos) and play like a dream. However, some of my music videos have no video when played in MCE (but play ok in WMP) or make a horrendous noise when they play. Anyone have any ideas about if and how I might be able fix this, or are these files destined for the recycle bin?

    Thanks in advance!

It was not dropped in RTM, I've had no problems playing QuckTime on my HTPCs. The problem is two folder: 1- Microsoft only added limited support; 2- MOV is a container format, similar to MP4 or MKV and can contain different format video, some of which will not be supported.

Are you on x64? If so, and your MOV file plays fine in WMP but not in MC7 then it is more than likely a problem with your 64-bit codec.

Hi mikinho, Thanks for the reply. Yes, I am indeed running 64-bit. I understand what you're saying about .mov being a container format - and thought as much - but I've no idea how to fix it. I think as it's only a small number of files involved it might be easiest to delete them and try to source alternatives. The problem is that they're mostly the MOV files supplied on CD singles as part of the CDExtra content, so they should be a reasonable quality... oh well.

I am using RC 64 and MOV files from my camera play great but not so well on my 360 extender within WMC- very choppy..  I have not tried it from the xbox dashboard yet.

It's very strange and I suspect mikinho has hit the nail on the head. I've just been through my music vids folder and I have a one VOB and a few MOV files which work fine. (Digicam MOV files work a treat, as originally posted). In my "rejects" folder I have some recent VOB files and a number of old MOV files copied from CD singles I bought in the late 90s and early 00s. I daresay there will be plenty more of those when I have my collection ripped so it sure would be nice to find out what CODEC they need!

'.MOV' support is partial in W7 - as stated in an earlier post it is a container format, and not everything it can contain can be played.

I have since converted all my .MOVs to .MP4s, which play perfectly.

OK, in case it helps others here's what I did in response to jrbown's post (thanks mate) -

Downloaded Prism Video Converter Software and converted the dodgy MOVs to AVI. I had to drag and drop the files from Explorer; if I tried to load them using the Add Files button the program crashed.

The converted files aren't perfect quality but it'll do for now :) And I'll keep hold of the originals in case something better comes along!

I've been able to play the .MOV files created on my digital camera OK in Windows 7 with no codec packs etc.

I now have Shark007 installed and I can still play these home movie clips, however in Media Browser I turned on the iTunes Trailers add-in, but WMC cannot play any of the trailers I get the usual Cannot Play Video error message.

I assume these trailers are in MOV or MP4 or something.

Is anyone else successfully using the iTunes Trailers add-in for Media Browser on the RTM ?

    Thanks.

EDIT: I forgot to mention I can play in 7MC, some HD movie trailers locally, that I downloaded from the Apple trailer website some time ago these are MOV.

I'm just having issues streaming the trailers via this Media Browser add-in.

happening here, too. I've got the Shark codecs installed as well. I can ply .MP4's and .MOV's locally as well.

Looks like this is a limitation of the MOV container support. See the below W7 codec support table. It is the first time I saw an official codec support table and I must admit it is very useful and explains the inconsistencies we are seeing w/ MOV support. I'm going to make a post highlighting the blog and table.

Where did you find the table?

So how come I can play movie trailers I download from Apple movie trailers website to hard disk in 7MC OK but not stream them via Media Browser itunes trailer add-in ?

Unless the add-in is broken that would explain it.

See http://thegreenbutton.com/forums/p/78174/386291.aspx#386291 for where I got it, well worth a read. I haven't seen the transcoding logic published anywhere else either.

In terms of the add-in I honestly don't know, I don't use Media Browser anymore. One thing to check is to verify the below registry key exists. While troubleshooting some friends system and a user over at Seven Forums I saw some installs the key would not exist and that would prevent streaming of quicktime files. If it doesn't exist let me know and I'll export from RTM

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type\video/quicktime

Have you looked into perhaps using Quick Time Alternative to get a more complete MOV support? Note: I have not tested in W7 and personally I'm keeping my system as native as possible in terms of decoders, at least for the time being. When CoreAVC 2.0 (x64) is released there is a good chance I'll go w/ that though.

When you're streaming them they're probably in a playlist which the chart above says the built in decoders don't support.
