I have anydvd (well, I have the trial, but I'll be purchasing it soon due to its "awesomeness")

Is there any tool that would let me easily rip the main movie with no compression and AC3 5.1 sound straight to DVR-MS in one step?
Right now my process is to create a single VOB from DVDShrink, and then quickfix with videoredo.

This is fairly straightforward, but it is 2 steps. I would love to find something that could automate this process a little further.

Simply, only use Videoredo (with AnyDVD).  I used to follow your exact steps.  But with hard drives so cheap, I skipped using DVDShrink and now rip straight to DVR-MS using Videoredo.  The process is only one step.

I use CloneDVD2, also by Slysoft.  You can pick the main movie, or any extras you like, and copy it "as is" to the hard disk.  You can choose the types of audio you want to include as a part of the process.  It isn't free, but it's good.  It will also create copies to a DVD.

I have a batch file that uses a combo of AnyDVD, DVDDecrypter and videoredo.

Insert DVD fire off the batch file and 5 - 10 minutes later i have a dvr-ms copy of the main movie on my server

My question is why are wanting to rip a DVD to DVRMS? If it is for use on the XBOX or another extender I would recommend the following setup. Use DVDFAB (free) to rip your DVD (no need for AnyDVD) and you can rip the whole disc or the main movie into a location. You then use a program called My Movies (www.mymovies.name) which is a movie catalog program and also now has builtin transcoding. It works great, I used to use Transcode360 (which doesn't work on 64bit) and now use mymovies. When you use MyMovies to do the transcoding you get full resolution and full AC3 5.1. I use it to transcode DVDs to my 56" HDTV and the picture looks just as good as running a DVD directly on my XBOX.

    Thats awesome!
I'm going to use "DefaultProgramsEditor" to make the DVD archiving system "wife friendly" by adding an autoplay option called "Archive this DVD" to run this batch file.

Steps to add DVD to library: 1) Insert DVD 2) Select "Archive this DVD" from options 3) Type the name of the movie and press enter 4) Remove DVD when the drive opens   Combined with Yammm for the metadata, this is gonna be so easy that I might need a larger HDD sooner than expected!

I've had trouble with a few dvds with DVDFAB, but it seems to work pretty well.
DVDShrink also USUALLY works pretty well, but not always. Sometimes one will work and not the other.

I've not had problems with any disc when using DVDShrink together with AnyDVD.
AnyDVD is paid software, BUT its pretty much bulletproof in my experiences.
I'm not sure how fast DVDFab is, I've only used it a few times, but I know I can typically rip a DVD with DVDshrink in about 10 minutes.

Im not really crazy about installing yet another service running in the background on my computer (MyMovies).
Also, I like the fact that DVR-MS doesnt actually change the MPEG-2 information at all, it just adds metadata to it, and puts it in a different container.
I'm sort of a nut about these things, but although you may not be able to detect a difference, the fact that it is being transcoded DOES imply that there COULD be some loss of quality. I feel like (and this is just me) if I can get the actual unmodified MPEG-2 stream to my TV, its going to be superior, and I prefer to do that. It would always be in the back of my mind; "am I REALLY seeing the best picture possible from my media?"

I really wish I could get DTS on my extenders, but that was a sacrifice I was willing to take. HOWEVER, every time I watch a movie from my extender which contained DTS sound on the DVD, I'm going to ask myself the same question about my sound, and although AC3 5.1 does still sound great, knowing that I have DTS capable media, and capable hardware (DVD player and my surround sound system) I know its gonna bug me, even if I may not really notice the difference.

I know, it sounds crazy, and its just a psycological thing, but its just how I am!

Ok, this is really getting frustrating!!!!
No matter what I do, I cant get DVDs that are ripped, then converted to DVR-MS to play back cleanly. They all jitter up and down and look horrible...

SOOO, I figured, what the heck... I'll go ahead and try the "mymovies" sugguestion mentoned above.

The problem is, with mymovies I go back to my original problem.
If I do mpg files through mymovies, I still cant RW/FF....

Why do people keep recomending mymovies as a workaround, when it doesnt solve the problem?
Or am I doing something wrong???

  •

Give Auto Rip n Compress a try, my settings for Auto Rip n Compress is use MakeMKV to Uncompressed WTV.  Converts DVDs quickly to WTV and you have RW/FF and they play on my Xbox 360 extender.

  •

tracer, what's the size of the resulting WTV?

HP HPE-270f Gateway DX4320 HP TX2z HP Proliant DL360 Server
  •

For uncompressed setting it is going to depend on the size of the movie "DVD".  Similar to what you would expect doing an uncompressed MPG.
