I've managed to change my 7MC background image, and I would like to change the font as well. I found a bunch of ttf font files in the ehome directory and replaced them all with my desired ttf font, each one being renamed to match the original ones. I was sure it would work but it didn't make any difference at all. Has anyone been successful changing fonts in 7MC?
This may or may not work, but its worth a shot.
I was having problems getting changes made in media center studio to work and stumbled across a fix.
Go to my previous thread on it here, and see if doing these same steps in the bottom of the FIRST post work for you. Let us know if it does.
It is possible see image, font set to Times New Roman.
It involves editing ehres.dll & MUI/LCI files, so not for novices.
I only did one test to see if it was possible and as you see it is.
I'll put a How To Guide together, but in the mean time if you would like a modified ehres etc, let me know, also i'll need to know what font styles you want to use.
brandtmacga, I've already done that hack to get my MC Studio changes to stick, and my modified menus are working.
vistademon, A how-to would be much appreciated. I've manually edited my ehres.dll to change the background image, so I am somewhat familiar with that. I've done a little playing around in there trying to change the fonts, but nothing has worked as expected. My fonts have changed to something that looks similar to the default only more bold, but not what I specified. I'm trying to use a font called Good Times, it is a true type font, but not a common one. There may be something about this particular font that is causing it not to work.
OK found that trying to change fonts by editing the various dll's is time consuming as areas of the Media Center UI are controlled by MCML. My first test was to change the COMMONSTYLES.XML, this only had a partial effect other areas of the UI remained unchanged.
So i created 3 new fonts using "Good Times" with the same names as the "Segoe" ttf files in ehome, just renaming the files won't work, "Good Times" font has to be edited so it has the same properties as the "Segoe" fonts.
The same applies to all font files in the ehome directory, i only tested the "Segoe".
Once created i just popped them into ehome, and presto all fonts changed on the Media Center UI, see image.
Remember always Backup any files replaced in the ehome directory.
If you want the font files, if unable to create new fonts, i can send.
Hope this helps.
I tried replacing the fonts but I only renamed them, I didn't edit properties. What editor did you use and which properties need to be changed? I've contacted you privately about sending me the modified Good Times font, but I would like to know how to do this in case I decide to use a different font.
I use FontCreator 6.0, theres 3 "Segoe" fonts in the ehome directory.
First open the "Good Times" font, then format naming, replace Good Times with the name of the "Segoe" font, this will have to be done for all 3 "Segoe" fonts.
You will also need to use the Glyph Transformer as there are 3 styles.
Then save as the same name as the Segoe font, for each of the files.
Don't install the fonts, just drop them into ehome.
Have sent Fonts via Email let us know how you get on.
Just wantedt to let others know I stumbled upon this one this afternoon while tweaking my Windows Green theme...
As many who use Media Center Studios know, a while back, changing the Fonts in MCS stopped working (as in, you'd go to the Fonts section, select the drop-downs, & they'd be blank).
Quite by accident, while looking in the .DLLs in the C:\Windows\eHome directory, I fount 9 Windows Fonts. Just for the heck of it, I decided to Right-Click all of them at once & hit "Install Fonts". After that, the next time I opened MCS, all the Font options had returned!
Changing fonts, sizes, etc. It's great! The ONLY glitch I haven't figured out yet is that it changes all the fonts EXCEPT the StartMenu. It's really weird--so if someone can shed light on what's going on there, I'd appreciate it.
Matt O. ...tivo what? ...dish dvr--uh... huh? ...cable dvr fees--you're kidding, right?
My System Specs
What do you consider the Start Menu - the default view when you first come into MC with TV, Movies, Music etc. on it?
BTW - I LOVE those Star Trek looking fonts in his screenshot!
Win7 Ultimate x32 SP1, Harmony 700, Comcast Houston (cable co), Cooler Master Elite 360 Mini Tower case on it's side, ASUS M4A87TD-USB3 MB, AMD Phenom II 555 Black DualCore, 4G RAM, PNY GT440 1gb DDR5, 1TGB SATA II (OS) - AHCI, 2TB SATA III (DATA) - AHCI, LG GGC-H20LK Combo drive, TMT3, 2 ea.Ceton InfiniTV 4s - PCI-e, Onkyo TX-SR608, Samsung PN50C550
No doubt! Those fonts are frickin sweet! :) I tried this weekend to reproduce that theme but I couldn't get it.
The font was "Good Times", which was easy enough to find; but, like the issue above, I couldn't get the font to apply everywhere. Only in certain places. It appears MCS doesn't replace all the necessary resources with the updated font info.
RE: Start Menu..
The Strip labels would remain the original font-- but the tile lables would change.
In the EPG, all the fonts would change, EXCEPT for the active selection. Whatever you hovered over would revert back to original font. :(
+1 on the Coolness of the fonts!!. really nice looking.. If you guys figure this out let me know please!!
Would love to change my font's to that..Looks more modern than oldschool...love it!
The "Good Times" font is a Pontiac font. You know, "let the good times roll" from the Pontiac ads in the 80's. I have been using it since vistademon helped me get it working. I think it looks great, but it's a little too wide and tends to cut off a lot of information at times, like show titles on the EPG. If you change font's the way vistademon has described, it is applied throughout MC.
Here are a few screens from my setup with simple black theme and Good Times font.
Interceptor - thanks for the detail. I'll give it a go & see if it works. Anyone hear from Vistademon lately? I'd love to get his theme PNGs & color settings. Maybe if he could use MCS to export it to a MCT, I'd be happy to post in on my dropbox for a while.
If you can't get him here you might try the Australian forum.
I think the screenshot he posted above is the standard European look.
tx for the direction Interceptor. I was able to find the theme over on the AU forum. Midnight Theatre. Looks sweet.
Also, I think I'm starting to figure out just how MCS applies the fonts. The reason it wasn't doing the Strip labels but it was doing the tile labels was becasue I was using the GoodTimes font for everything; but, I only had the one version (Regular). I didn't have a Bold, SemiBold, or Light. Since I don't have a license for FontCreator & don't really want to buy one, I just decided to tell MCS to use Regular for all the font-styles & not apply any SB or Light.
After that, the GoodTimes font now appears everywhere!
Looks pretty cool & I didn't have to overwrite the original 3 fonts in the ehome directory. Now I just need to find a "like" font that has all the different styles. :)
