Making my Media Center PC feel like a real TV. Is this the impossible dream?

Like I said, it takes the AV receiver and TV at least 10 seconds to get into usage mode. That has nothing to do with media center and would be the same if I was using a Comcast DVR. I still doubt the Comcast DVR would go into live TV mode instantly. I can't test that since I have zero plans of using a Comcast DVR in my lifetime. Q.

It amazes me that so many of the community can live with 25 seconds!
Well I have a DLP TV that takes about 15-30 seconds to warm up anyway...

I just tested my Comcast HD box and from power off to live tv it is in fact almost instant. So maybe a cable PVR would work the same way. This is all pointless for me anyway. I can't get the Activities function of my Harmony Remote to set the inputs on the Samsung TV correctly anyway!! Q.

I leave my Linksys on all the time (8 watts so very little power consumption).  No boot issues, no fan noise, and if I leave it on Live TV it stays there.  Anything more than a few seconds is way too long for start up (that is why every TV uses power even when off, consumers won't stand for anything more than 3 - 4 seconds startup).

Lost me.  Isn't Linksys a router?  How does that help?

    Linksys make/made extenders (DMA2100/DMA2200).

Have you tried installing an SSD drive?  This has had the biggest performance increase in my system - and yes, I probably have about 30 seconds, however as has been said before, the screen takes about 10-15 to wake up, so we don't consider it to be a problem!

Strange for your system to take so long to come out of standby. Both my HTPC and my main desktop (both Win7) probably only take about 5 to 10 seconds to being usable.  What is your HTPC hardware config?

Windows 7 (x64) Media Center: Core i5 650, 4GB DDR3, 2x Pinnacle 7010ix (2x DVB-S, 2x DVB-T), 2x 2.5" WD 250GB RAID-1, 3x 2TB Samsung 3.5", 2x 1.5TB Samsung 3.5" (all hidden in rack cabinet in garage)* Extender 1: X-box 360 Slim 4GB, 46" Sharp 1080p LCD TV, Logitech Z-5500 Speakers Extender 2: Linksys DMA-2100, cheap 26" LCD! * Replacing old WHS since Microsoft removed Drive Extender and did not include Media Center. SyncToy used to duplicate certain folders and planning to use Acronis True Image for PC backups.

Are you saying you can view live tv within 5-10 seconds from resume?  tell me your secret ;).  Sure it takes 5-10 seconds to be usable, but a further 15 to 20 seconds for the tuners to kick in.  As I said, they are the critical path.

I'm at work, so don't recall the specific models of all the kit, but the build is only 1 year old:

Asus MATX Mobo - onboard graphics Nvidia 9300 chip
Intel 5300 dual core CPU running at stock 2.6 Ghz.
    2 Gb Corsair 6400 RAM
    Corsair 450 Watt PSU
7010 ix DBS / DVB Tuner
1TB Western Digital Green Hard Drive
    Wireless USB stick

I have, but can't justify the cost, and would it improve the speed of a resume by much?

We don't usually go straight to live TV so that may well be the issue - we normally only watch programmes that have started to record already to avoid adverts. I do have the same tuner card as you. Your spec should be more than sufficient for everything.

I'm not convinced a SSD would help as it does sound like the fact that the tuner takes a little time to get going.  So I'm not sure there is a solution to this with your current hardware.

What you might consider however is to look at something like the Acer Revo as the basis for your HTPC combined with some USB tuners.  As this system is very low power draw you could keep it running 24/7 with the TV always on.

My Pc comes out of sleep and Media Center is useable within 5-10 seconds, it takes longer for teh tv to kick in then the PC so I turn on the Tv first.

When Im done with media center I always leave it on the menu so Havent ever shut it down while playing live tv so I'm unsure how long that would take.

Then again I know what My HTPC is, its a HTPC. I choose to use it instead of a dedicated box like a tivo or a sky plus box etc but Its still a fully multifunctioning PC where the others are not.

If one were to put their game pc into standby how long before they can continue with their WOW game? Same thing IMHO.

You have a point, and I can be accused of some woolly thinking here.  I have another media center setup on my study PC which I tend to use for recordings.  It's a fast machine (E8500, 4Gb RAM, 1 cheap DBS PCI tuner), and I always keep it in sleep.  I walk in, wiggle the mouse, and it's up in 2 secs flat.  I then manually fire up media center and am watching something in a few seconds more.  So what's going on here?  I am firing up more kit in the lounge, but the system is set to start the PC first.

I'm working late tonight, so can't test this till tomorrow, any suggestions welcome.

    Hi,

I've just installed one in my pc (again), and the speed difference is phenominal!  Resume is now press button, its there - I can't vouch for the fact that you may not be able to get into livetv in the performance level that you seem to expect, but it will certainly help - you're performance issue seems to be the tuner initialisation - we don't tend to watch live tv currently, always watching recorded tv so we can skip ads!

its a very good question that i somewhat have worked out.  one is that cable boxes or tivos dont turn off, they just cut the video feed.  so to match there speed with your logitech just set it for

power on: turn on tv,  live tv

power off: turn tv off, stop

this way your not wasting your HD and if your power is set for balanced then it will drop to one core and not use any real power.

You need to set up activities on your Harmony - one for Recorded TV, one for Live TV, etc. Now, if you have the MC pictures screensaver kicking in, the first command the remote sends will only get rid of the screensaver. You need to make a sequence command (where it sends several commands in a row) for it to send the command you want (i.e. LiveTV) a few times when you presss the LiveTV activity (it can receive the command several times without any problems)

Good tip - I'll try that.  Thanks.

     It works... sort of.

When it switches on, it navigates through Guide then Recorded TV then into channel.  9 seconds with PC on.  A bit clunky, but a good stop gap while I work on the restart from sleep.  Thanks again for the tip.

Then something is messed up with your activities on your Harmony - when you add devices to your Harmony, it should build the activities for you - and there are direct IR commands to go to Live TV, Recorded TV, Movies, Videos, etc. It shouldn't have to hunt around to get to those inputs.
