I have used RDC and VNC for years. Due to a company policy, I cant not have VNC installed on my notebook and RDC is super flaky. Does anyone have a good and reliable alternative to manage my MCE from my notebook? Thanks.
logmein is good. the app for iphone / ipad is very useful too
Most companies that have a policy against VNC will also include Logmein in there but unless it is a corporate phone then the mobile app is very handy
If you haven't used Windows Live Mesh 2011 (previously Live Mesh) before it is worth checking out. It isn't as polished as I would like but it has a lot of potential and I think it will get there (the developers who are working on it, both Microsoft and consultants are very good developers).
For some reason, my company doesnt mind Logme in because it isn't a TSR like VNC. I did install Logme in and will try that. I just thought there were good local LAN solutions out these days.

You need to supply more details. Is this to connect to your HTPC when you're at home? At work? On the road?
I have Logmein installed for when I'm on the road. It's OK, but it shuts down TV viewing when in use because it's not HDCP compliant.
However, at home I use Remote Desktop. I find it very stable and with the ability to sign on multiple times (with a hack) I can program the schedule without interrupting TV viewing.
An aside: I'm the I.T. decision maker at my company and we have pretty strict rules about what can be installed on a company laptop for security reasons. If the company pays for the computer the company gets to make the rules. I get around that at home and on the road by using my personal laptop.
I use Microsft remote desktop to conect to literally thousands of windows servers worldwide. It is beyond me how it can be described as super flakey.
We can also connect via Vnc and dameware with dameware being a preferable option display wise. Dameware is also more portable and does push installs.
Logme in is great for connection back to Hope PC's with the pro version allowing push installs.

out of interest you can get round this if you want to use logmein to watch media center, i found it by accident but i don't use it, i only have the free version so no sound, but once you are logged in and media center has shut down if I launch MediaBrowser rom the start menu it opens MC and, because I have Mikinho's live tv tweak enabled, it just goes straight into tv. everything works for some reason and i don't get the no video message
