Problems with Windows Media center DRM after install of Windows 7 Please help

    I have posted the following before. 

    I am a former broadcast engineer.  Recently I ordered up digital cable with a cable card from Time Warner Cable.  Since Time Warner Cable(TWC) uses switched digital video and cable card technology, I needed a switched digital video adapter (received a Cisco STA1520) and a cable card for my ATI Digital cable tuner (ATI DCT).  I first attempted to install under Windows Vista and had all sorts of problems.  Interestingly people at TWC told me that their tech support only handles Windows 7 as they said that Windows 7 was a lot easier to set up and worked right.  So I upgraded to Windows 7.  Interestingly after following all of the prompts for setting up the ATI DCT with cable card and making sure the cable card was permissioned properly (verified by two TWC technical representatives physically) the problem is not a TWC issue under Windows 7.  I am having the same problems under Windows 7 that I had under Windows Vista with a few seconds of video then no sound and sometimes no picture.  Microsoft technical support has on several occasions tried to help with vista and could not resolve the issues by remote connection.  I AM NOW BEYOND THE HELP THAT THE STANDARD TECHNICAL SUPPORT PERSONNEL CAN DEAL WITH!!!!!

    I need answers as I have RTFM'd everywhere I could and am not getting any resolution to the problems.  I wish I was a billion dollar corporate chief technical officer as I might have better luck getting resolution to my problems.  Verifying my hardware I do not have failing hardware.  I am beyond frustration on this issue.  Maybe if I were Bill Gates I might be able to get quick resolution but my bugs that I am experiencing are serious and need resolution by someone who can crawl through the software and fix the software on the fly if needed.   I am willing to work with whoever has the resources to deal directly with this problem.  NO MORE STANDARD TECH SUPPORT PLEASE!!!!! 

    This is not a signal issue as signal has been tested by TWC at the ATI DCT and found to be fine and in addition to this I have another TV and cable tuner that works fine elsewhere in the house.  The ATI DCT works fine in analog mode.  This means no problems with the tuner.  Two different cable cards have been tried with the exact same results.  IS ANYONE QUALIFIED TO HELP!!!!?????

    Firmware in the DCT is 1.19.  One of the microsoft support call center personnel tried to revert the firmware to 1.17 and then claimed I had a broken DCT.  I removed the DCT from the device manager then reinstalled to reupdate the firmware to 1.19.  Apparently the person on the other end of the line did not understand that you DO NOT REVERT FIRMWARE!!!!!

    I am currently talking to one of the regional experts within Time Warner about this issue and he and I have determined I have followed all of their guidlines/troubleshooting routines including correct connection of the equipment in question.  Pairing has been done several times with different cards.  Both the DCT and the SDV adapter are plugged into the computer via USB with the SDV adapter between the Time Warner signal and the DCT plugged into the computer.  I see ~5 sec. of video and audio then the picture stops.  According to both myself and the Time Warner rep this is indicative of a permissioning issue within the software itself.  This occurs both with a tuned analog channel or a digital channel without fail with the cable card.  Without the cable card and the DCT set up for analog only channels the tuner works fine.  However the questions you have asked though are the typical ones I have already dealt with here with Time Warner.  This includes the observation of a Time Warner field tech who checked through all I did and determined that all was hooked up correctly.

    I sent the following to the Time Warner representative I am working with in the following email.


    The issues bluntly deal with DRM and Windows Media Center. Following the traces in the webpage for the ATI Digital Cable Tuner (ATI DCT), I was able to determine that the video for most of the stations is going into protect mode not allowing me to view the video. I started trying to work this out in Windows Vista but I am seeing the same issues under Windows 7. The Microsoft case # is 1121509833. Since this issue is consistent between both Windows 7 and Windows Vista, the issue is with Media Center directly and DRM.

    I have already been able to verify with the Time Warner technicians the following results.

    1. All equipment is hooked up correctly.

    2. Signal levels at all tuners/adaptors are at the correct levels.

    3. Cable cards are permissioned properly.

    4. Setup was followed as prescribed by Microsoft.

    With Microsoft techs they made the following mistakes/assumptions/standard scripted corrections in Vista

    1. The knowledge base article at http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=891664 was followed both by me and Microsoft support without success.

    2. Attempted reversion of video drivers was attempted.

    3. Attempted reversion of firmware on the DCT was attempted. Here the Microsoft phone support said I had broken hardware at this point (funny...NOT!!!). However the tuner works fine when reverted back to version 1.19 of the tuner firmware.  At this point I can watch channels not DRM protected.

    4. Checked to see all drivers were up to date which they are now at this point.

    5. Advised to upgrade to Windows 7 (Done with same problems as in Vista just slightly different error messages about not being able to update playready)

    6. Tried sfc /scannow to fix system.

    I am now currently running Windows 7 with the following hardware configuration in the attached file called system report.txt. (which I would be willing to include.

    I have also since seen in the last 3 days since the Windows 7 upgrade, 1 Blue screen of death, At least 3 instances of Windows Media center locking up, 2 shutdowns that had to be forced, 3 crashes with automatic reboots immediately.  Are you sure Windows 7 was ready to be released?  (I have since started working on some timing issues with installed memory)

     And I have followed the following with no resolution.

    1.  Deinstall and reinstall of Playready as described.

    Windows 7 is more then ready for production, it's rock solid in every sitiuation I've used it.  That said I never do OS upgrades.  And Windows 7 is required for SDV support, Vista does not support the SDV adapters.

    The first thing I would try is to uninstall and re-install PlayReady, this is the DRM software Media Center uses.  If that still doesn't help and given the fact that you're seeing crashes in Windows 7 I would do a clean Windows 7 install.

    2.  Attempted update of DRM.

     I have tried to RTFM about DRM and have gone nowhere. 
    I get the following error in Windows Vista Media center when I try to update the digital tuner setup.

    The upgrade of your security components was incomplete. You will not be able to watch or recored premium or high definition contents until the upgrade is successful.

    I have tried deleting the DRM folder and following instructions on this link.

    Please follow these methods.

    Method 1

    I would suggest you to check if the system clock is correct.

    Method 2

    1.       Try to disable the firewall and check if the issue still persists.
    Open Windows Firewall by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking Security, and then clicking Windows Firewall.

    2.       Click Turn Windows Firewall on or off.  If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

    3.       Click On (recommended), and then click OK.

    Method 3

    I would suggest creating a new user account and testing under the new account if you still get the error. If you don’t get the error, there is likely a file/setting in your old one that is causing the conflict and you will need to copy over your files to the new account. If the error does still exist, you may need to perform an in-place upgrade, or a reinstall.

    1.       Click the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking User Accounts and Family Safety, and then clicking User Accounts.

    2.        Click Manage another account.  If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

    3.         Click Create a new account.

    4.        Type the name you want to give the user account, click an account type, and then click Create Account.

    Method 1.

    Time was successfully syncronized with time.windows.com and this does not solve the problems.

    Windows Firewall was totally disabled and this does not fix the problem

    Creating a new user account does not solve the problem.

    An in place upgrade for me is not an option.  I have the original Vista RTM disk and cannot back out service pack 1 or service pack 2.

    A clean reinstall from scratch is not an option at this point.

     You may try this for Windows Vista:

    First you need to close the system tray icon of the application that is using DRM or even Windows Media Player.

    1. Open Computer icon
    2. Click on Organize
    3. Click on Search and Folder Options
    4. Click on Show Hidden Files and folder and uncheck the box right beside the "Hide Protected Operating System Files"
    5. Click on Apply and then Ok buttons
    6. Double click local disk C:
    7. Click on Program data Folder
    8. Click on Microsoft Folder
    9. Click on Windows folder
    10. Open DRM folder and delete everything including Cache.
    10. Open Internet Explorer (and this will only work using IE)
    11. type this on the address bar http://drmlicense.one.microsoft.com/Indivsite   and it will prompt you to install Active X or Run Add-ons before clicking the Upgrade button.
    12. Next will be http://drmlicense.one.microsoft.com/crlupdate/en/crlupdate.html and again there will be Upgrade button before clicking on it please do install the Active x that will be located on top of the page as pop-up blocker.

    Now try playing or downloading movies that is using security component for you to download protected files such as movies or songs....  Hope this may help you a lot...

     I have tried to RTFM and have had no luck.  I need help.  With Windows 7 I am still seeing issues I SHOULD NOT SEE!!!!!!   The software in Windows 7 says that I am compliant.  RTFM on hardware installed says I am compliant.  Why will the software not work!!!!

    I'd really like to try to help, but honestly I skimmed your post as much as I could tollerate -- it's full of things that didn't work -- and I failed to see the problem description. Can you please write a brief description of the issue?

    In short DRM is NOT WORKING.  The long post is to let you know what had been tried.

    It sounds like you had this problem before with Vista, and still have an issue when you upgraded.  Is that correct?   Have you tried a clean install?  I highly recommend that, since that should clean-up whatever bad state your machine is in.  Once you do a clean install, you will need to go to Windows Update to download the ATI update to re-install the drivers and services for the Digital Cable Tuner and Tuning Adapter.  Your FW should already be at 1.19.12. If you have an OEM Digital Cable PC, you will need to use the 5x5 Digital Tuner COA key on the side/back of the PC when you go back through tuner setup.  If your machine is not a Digital Cable PC, then you should be able to use the Digital Cable Advisor tool, inside of the Media Center Extra's Gallery.  I would do a clean install, then setup Media Center and make sure it is working.  Then, if you have any other software such as firewall or antivirus, you can install them one at a time and make sure it still works.      Also, you had indicated you were trying to get the Tuning Adapter SDV working on Vista.  It only works on Windows 7, so that never should have worked.   - Joe

    Join the club. I've had this problem on Vista Media Center on all PCs I've tried, and COX is my cable provider. I did a clean install of Win 7 on multiple PCs and have this problem on all of them.  (Of course, I'm sure you realize that tuning adapters weren't supported under Vista, they are Win 7 with FW 1.19 only)

    I think with Windows 7 and tuning adapters the problem is actually worse. I have removed the tuning adapters as things ran more reliably without them and that's more important to me than the few switched digital stations I'll loose.  

    The only solution when it happens is to press Stop, then play/resume and it will usually work the second time.  I hope you find a solution, but its my belief the problem is in the dark recesses of Windows code, and until Microsoft takes the initiative to fix it, it won't be fixed. Since the problem has existed ever since Cable Cards were first supported by Media Center, I can infer its not a big Microsoft priority to get this resolved.

    I attempted the workaround you mention and in my case it does not work. 

    However you did describe the exact same problem I am having.  I am absolutely certain that the problem is in the dark recesses of Windows Code also.  Specifically the problem is with DRM and the setup software in Media center for Windows 7 was supposed to fix the problem.  In short it has not.  Your answer here indicates to me that the problem is not limited to myself alone and is a more general problem that Microsoft should address.  Or another question I have is should I check to see if Linux has some solutions Microsoft does not have here?  I do like the fact that in most cases Microsoft just works, maybe somewhat clunky at times but it does work.  However for a system designed in part to be a media PC I find the DRM problems here troubling.  In no way should DRM go into protect mode when the PC is

    1.  Not using any type of media extender.

    2.  Does not have a Blue ray player (although I could get one)

    3.  Does work under analog.

    4.  The tuner does work for channels that does not have DRM encoding. ( this on time warners cable network is almost exclusively limited to on air broadcast.

    5.  By law personal recording for later playback is permitted by the FCC and the courts.

    Clearly this to me the DRM problems would have been a show stopper if I were testing Windows 7 beta and the following as it was advertised in the following webpage regarding Windows 7.

If your PC passes you will be able to use these ATI tuners with a cablecard to receive encrypted channels supplied by your local cable company for a small monthly fee. (Normally $2.99 to $3.99 per month).

    My PC passed the test when I ran the tool suggested by this post.  However I also find this statement to be a little bit interesting.  Here a clear statement is made that encrypted cable should be received without problem.  In short if DRM is created by a human it should be fixable by a human if they are motivated.  I am a little upset though that the standard answer is a clean install which in your case also does not work which buttresses my point that DRM for Cable Card as implemented by Microsoft is broken.  Will it be fixed?

    That's a real interesting point because I do have extenders but have NEVER had the problem with an extender.  Never, only the TV connected to the PC has had these problems.

    Yup, that's true.  

    I'll go further and say I think its related to the DRM "chain" between the video card and the TV.  For some reason the Media Center doesn't think my TV (a New 52" Samsung) connected through HDMI to an HDMI video card is compatible with DRM when of course it is.  Maybe Windows doesn't wait long enough for the handshaking to take place, I don't know, but many others here have had this problem as well.

    Ben is right that it would help to have had a better description of the issue.  The steps taken from support implied a DRM invalidation problem, and recovery not working made it sound like the system is in a bad state.  There is no known issue with DRM that I know of that is "in the dark recesses of Windows code".  However, DRM by it's nature needs to lock the content to the HW, otherwise piracy would be easier.  Therefore, steps are taken to determine the HW configuration, and encrypt to only that.  Since people can install all sorts of SW including debuggers etc. that can attempt to fool with the DRM, and changing the HW can invalidate the DRM.  A clean install will ensure the system is in a clean state.  The steps for recovery in the long post suggested one of those DRM invalidating issues.

    However, reading back through Stalag's post, I see the ~5 sec of video/audio description, and you mention it works on analog.  That and your issue Anogee sounds like they are likely HDCP issues. Digital output such as DVI-D or HDMI requires HDCP otherwise it will block (per the CableLabs OCUR spec).  HDCP issues are usually due to an invalid handshake between the graphics card and the monitor.   HDCP is not a MS problem, since we have nothing to do with it.  If there are HDCP issues, it is the graphics card/graphics driver, HDCP enabled TV, or switch.  Early HDCP monitors and early HDCP enabled graphics cards had issues where they were not strictly HDCP compliant, and therefore would have problems similar to what you highlight.  If you have an older graphics card, or an older TV, you may have this issue.  Also, if you have some sort of repeater (such as a HDMI switching AV Receiver), those can cause these problems. 

    Before doing a clean install, you should rule out a HDCP issue. Since you say it works under analog, that is a clue that it is not a DRM issue.  Anogee's comment that his works with extender and not the local graphics output implies also implies it is not a DRM problem, since DRM works the same way on extender.  However since extender has a different HDCP solution, that is a good place to start.  While you probably do not want to run in VGA mode since the output gets down-res'ed to 520K pixels, or approximately 1/4 1080 resolution (960x540) per the OCUR spec, doing that as a test will rule out HDCP issues. 

    If it does look like an HDCP issue, I would definitely see if there is an updated graphics driver. If it is an old graphics card that does not have a better driver,then it may make sense to upgrade to a more modern graphics card. This is especially the case if  you have a fairly recent TV like yours anogee; it should be compliant.  If it is an older TV, there is little you can do besides either buying a new TV, or using component (if your graphics card supports it), or VGA (again, not the ideal experience.)

    If this is truly a handshake problem with HDCP it should be possible to write a tool to test for the negotiation of the handshake and to determine where the handshake fails.  A good note and testing solution that is easily understood would help to resolve some of these issues.  This is related to DRM however and should be addressed properly.  Unfortunantly Intel is harder to deal with than Microsoft is and pointing the fingers while doing nothing is not helpful to us in real consumerland.  We do try in good faith to try to fix the "black box" without being able to troubleshoot the problems with a good solution that works because we have no direct documentation on how to fix the issue.  Unlike a large corporation, I do not have $1000's of dollars to spend to throw parts at a "Black Box" problem hoping the problem magically disappears.  Nor do I have $1000's to spend on hiring "experts" to solve these issues.  Is there any help?

    After further consultation with my Time Warner contact, I will attempt a fresh install of Windows 7.  I do have the following issues/concerns.

    1.  My system is a RAID 10 system.  Because of the 4 drive configuration and the problems with installing back to a RAID 10 system, I will purchase a fresh drive for testing purposes. 

    2.  Since I have Windows 7 Upgrade, will I have to reinstall my Windows Vista RTM OEM version before upgrading to Windows 7 or can I do a fresh direct install of Windows 7 directly.? 

    3.  If I have to install Vista, do I need to upgrade to either service pack 1 or 2 to do the upgrade?

    4.  I will preserve the original drive configuration because of my data from my business stored on the RAID array.

    By the way the monitor and video card are connected via a DVI-D cable and the current video card is an XFX Radeon 4770 and I am running a  NEC LCD24WMCX monitor with the system custom built off of an Intel DX48BT2 motherboard and the Cisco SDV adaptor and the external ATI DCT tuner both attached via USB to the motherboard. and both chained properly for video reception.  All was connected properly as verified twice by Time Warner Techs

    In spite of my suggesting it, I am not sure you should attempt to clean install yet until you rule out the HDCP issues, especially since doing the clean install will cause major head-aches for you, and it is still not clear that will achieve the goal of getting this to work.  Based on my re-reading of what you wrote in your posts, it still seems like a HDCP issue. You indicated analog works. Does this mean you can get your protected content with a VGA or component connection?  As I mentioned, if so this is not a DRM issue, and I am not sure the clean install will help.  Here are some things to try:

    1.  Look for a new graphics driver for your card.

    2.  Try a different HDCP graphics card if you have one available to you to borrow, preferably NVidia so you have that as a datapoint in addition to ATI/AMD.

    3.  Try a different HDCP graphics monitor.  Do you have a HD television you can try hooking the output up to?

     You might also considering taking the SDV TA out of the loop while troubleshooting. If you can get protected content without it, then adding the TA back in can be the final step.

     In answer to your points.

    1.  All drivers pertaining to all video devices, monitors, cards, etc. are at the newest revision level as released by the manufacturer.

    2.  I saw the same issues with my Radeon MSI 2600XT pro video card that I did with my current card.

    3.  Both my LG graphics 20 inch monitor (since sold) and the 24" NEC see the same issues.

    4.  The SDV TA has been tested both in and out of the loop with the same results.

    I have exhausted my resources for HDCP testing.  The problems still exist and protected channels still cannot be viewed.  Is there a solution to test directly the components for HDCP compliance?

    Dont know if this is even applicable to your situation, but could you go over to the cyberlink site and download the blueray advisor?  It will tell you if your HDCP is working.
