Even with the A/C on, sometimes, my little man cave is just hot with 2 computers running, maybe a tube amp if I'm playing guitar. If I feel it just isn't cooling down enough with adequate fans in the system, a ceiling fan and A/C running, I just open 1 side of my case. My temps have never been too high but if I have a long, warm night of mega recording, I will occasionally do this as a backup.

rustoleum Thought I'd share some of my setup: my system is in the basement of my house with HDMI cable and a USB hub (for BlueRay/DVD drive, Bluetooth keyboard/mouse dongle, Media Center remote and iPhone/iPod connectivity) coming up through the floor to my media room. Since the computer is in the basement, I don't really care about the noise of a fan, and I haven't encountered any overheating issues anyway since my basement is a good 10-15 degrees cooler than the media room anyway. This will obviously not work for all (and apologies for being off-topic), but I gave up a long time ago trying to get an HTPC to conform to a certain noise-level/form-factor/temperature by simply getting the entire box out of sight (and out of mind). Might be a 'solution' for someone else, too.

my HTPC is in a side office, not the livingroom, so the result of the noise itself isn't too imporant, but the problem is that i spent extra care/money to get a very noise-free PC built. putting a whirring fan in it would bum me out.
i still would like to know if anyone has verified that tuners have been dropped in their system because of heat. i'm nervous that i'm going to install a fan, lower the temp by 15C, and still lose tuners about once a week because heat really isn't a big issue.
where do i go to get the temp reading
The temperature is reported separately for each of the four tuners. In the Ceton InfiniTV Device Webpage, on each of the four Tuner tabs (One, Two, Three, Four), click on the Tuner sub-tab (default view is the Status sub-tab) and scroll down (if necessary) to theTemperature: line.

This isn't mine, but was posted somewhere on this forum a few months back. Save it as a HTML file and then you can open it with IE and it'll show the temps of all four tuners at once. I find it's often necessary to reload it a few times to get a good reading.<html><body><div class='header'>Ceton InfiniTV Temperatures</div><div id="variable_row"> <div id="variable_label">Tuner #1:</div> <div id="variable_value"> <iframe frameborder='0' scrolling='no' style='padding: 0px; margin: 0px; width:450px; height:28px;' src='http://192.168.200.1/get_var?i=0&s=diag&v=Temperature'> </iframe> </div> </div> <div id="variable_label">Tuner #2:</div> <div id="variable_value"> <iframe frameborder='0' scrolling='no' style='padding: 0px; margin: 0px; width:450px; height:28px;' src='http://192.168.200.1/get_var?i=1&s=diag&v=Temperature'> </iframe> </div> </div> <div id="variable_label">Tuner #3:</div> <div id="variable_value"> <iframe frameborder='0' scrolling='no' style='padding: 0px; margin: 0px; width:450px; height:28px;' src='http://192.168.200.1/get_var?i=2&s=diag&v=Temperature'> </iframe> </div> </div> <div id="variable_label">Tuner #4:</div> <div id="variable_value"> <iframe frameborder='0' scrolling='no' style='padding: 0px; margin: 0px; width:450px; height:28px;' src='http://192.168.200.1/get_var?i=3&s=diag&v=Temperature'> </iframe> </div> </div></body></html>

Cool, thanks John, works great!
I found this plug in from Digital Media Zone very handy. It shows the temps as well as the signal strength and SNR for all 4 tuners.

That's a great plug in, but to use it you have to go to the gallery and then click on it while in Media Center. To just monitor the tuner temps without going to Media Center, the little web page tool works well.
(I have both BTW and was one of the first users/beta testers of the DMZ plugin).

Whoa .. Perfect timing i JUST installed this today Vantec SP-FC70-BL Spectrum System Fan Card with Dual Adjustable 70mm UV LED Fans (Blue)
It was like $17 on amazon and REALLY easy to install .. i took before and after screen shots and at half speed (it uses a Slider to control fan speed ) .. I went from 67.4C before and after running my Tuners non Stop all afternoon i am now getting Temps of 44.0 C .. at full blast they are Loud .. but at 1/2 they are not bad , but i do have my Media PC in a different room and use 4 Xbox 360's to watch the Tuners
I am actually really happy with the fans , the do glow Blue but i have a Closed case so i dont notice the led's
Hope this helps ! ...
radams srb_tucson radamsi guess i forgot an important detail...i need a low profile piece of equipment. i can't find a single PCI fan for a half height case anywhere. bleh Have you seen these? cgi.ebay.com/.../110425811146 Steve i pulled the trigger on this. hopefully it's quiet. i did a test last night to try to break my tuners. i recorded 4 channels at once for 5 straight hours. when i woke up this morning, i saw that the tuners dropped somewhere along the way. they almost never drop when i'm watching just one thing. i'm thinking temperature really is my problem here.

so this seems to have lowered the temp by 8-10C...which is good.
but it's also pretty noisy. rookie question... is a noisy fan something that can be fixed just by using different blades?

Now that current PCs are sufficiently fast for most tasks, I would really like to see the chip manufacturers conentrate more on ultra-low power consumption chips that require only passive heat sinks.
is it common to not have the ceton card respond with temps? tried the ip address, the html file shown on the first page of this thread and add-in for temps and status. all show either blank or n/a.
The one i mentioned above gives me a solid 20-30C drop ... i did lots of testing over the past couple days , i am actually amazed how well it works
I too have borderline heat issues. (I have a tiny shuttle case) I have no free PCI slots so I'll have to mount something above/below it somehow. I'm going to check out my local Central Computer this week and see if I can find something similar to the fans linked here and other threads. I should probably take clearance measurements first so I know exactly what I can fit.
Here's a video of my case and cards installed. (see how cramped things are)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xttF4-XMS0k
I recorded this video above many months ago, and now that it's finally getting hot in San Francisco I need to cool this thing ASAP
I totally lose tuners and need to reboot to get them back.
Mac Mini (Late 2012, Ivy i7-3615QM/Intel HD 4000) Win 8 Pro x64 Media Center, 2 USB Ceton InfiniTV tuners + Companion iPhone App, XBox extender, MyMovies.dk/WHS 2011 StableBit DrivePool, TIP: (DISABLE Dynamic Contrast to prevent 29/59 flicker)
day 4 of the noisy little half height fans...no tuners have been dropped since installation. that's a very good thing. temps are 50-55 at idle, and max out at 63 with heavy load.
...now i need to see why windows is occasionally freezing up while watching TV. my DVR HDD is a fairly old WD green drive, 16MB cache. Could a disk failure (not the OS disk though) cause windows to freeze?
