I'm trying to connect my Slingbox HD to my media center PC running windows 7.  My video card is an MSI N210 Nvidia Geforce 210 with DVI, HDMI, and VGA out.  Right now the HDMI is hooked up to my TV.  Has anyone succesfully connected a slingbox to a media center PC, the only inputs on the slingbox are component, s-video, and composite.

     Thanks,
    Fleming

Two options: 1. Use an extender (Xbox 360) 2. Use a video card with a TV out and connect the slingbox to that.

anyone have a recommendation on a video card with a TV out that would fit in a low profile case, has HDMI out, and works with windows 7?

You'd need a DVI-HDMI adapter or cable, but this 9400GT supports Component out and DVI...

I have configured my system in this way and the result is better than I expected:

    Here are some comments:

    • I had to purchase a device which converts DVI to component.  My video card has 2 DVI outputs and I used the available one to connect to my Slingbox Pro HD.
    • My Media Center has a Tuner Card w/ a QAM tuner
    • I have 3 slingcatchers in the house.  I can now sling all of my media center content (stored on Windows Home Server) to my TVs.
    • The things that I like most about this arrangement:
      • I can now utilize the media center interface to watch TV on all TVs with a slingcatcher
      • Since I have a QAM tuner in the Media PC, the HD broadcasts look quite crisp when "Slinged".
      • I utilize my Media PC as a DVR, so all of my recorded content is available on all of the TVs.  Of course I can pause on 1 TV and continue watching somewhere else (this works for live broadcasts as well)
      • I have ripped all of my purchased DVDs to a NAS, allowing me to have access to my entire library instantly from any TV
      • My home photos, videos and my iTunes library is on my Media Center, allowing me access to the same from any TV
      • The Media Center interface was designed for the user to be able to perform all required tasks utilizing a remote control (no mouse/keyboard required).  This lends itself well to Slinging the interface to slingcatchers  (aside from the absence of Page Up/Down buttons being mapped to the sling remote).
      • Essentially, I have access to all of the above whenever I have WiFi access via SlingPlayer for iPhone
      • Since I can access Netflix via Media Center, I can view all of their streamed content anywhere
      • Also can access Internet TV providers anywhere, as well as digital radio offered by my cable provider
      • My cable TV provider doesn't require a cable box for "basic" digital cable (which not only includes QAM channels required by law, but things like ESPN HD, Disney XD, etc.).  Since the program guide/DVR functionality of media center is so good, I don't have to pay for a single cable box (these things can add up).  Believe me, it's not really a true bargain since I did have to buy the SlingCatchers, but you get so much more from the slingcatchers.
    • The shortcomings to this setup are:
      • I can only sling to one place at a time  (not a problem thus far in my house since my kids are quite young, but it will come up)
      • As far as I know, the content that is "Slinged" is not in 5.1 Surround (unless Sling has added that capability)
      • The "Slinged" image is noticably not true HD quality, but VERYclear and watchable
      • Of course, there is a slight delay in navigating with the slingcatcher (or Harmony, in my case) remote which can be trying if you need to navigate a lot.
    •

In summary, I think this is a very acceptable "poor man's" media distribution system and will suit my needs until I'm ready to put media PCs on each TV.   There are certainly better ways to accomplish what has been described above, but bear in mind that I tried to keep the post on topic---the main reason I went w/ a Sling-based solution is that my wife and kids watch TV from Japan from a SlingBox Pro HD that I have there and this content is available in high quality throughout my house.

I know this post is a bit old but I'm going to try to do the same -- use a slingbox connected to a WMC PC to sling video to other devices in the house.

I don't have a Slingbox yet so the answer may become obvious, but I have this question: how do you 'control' the PC using the Slingbox? I assume this is done through the IR blaster, so that means the PC needs to have an IR receiver. (Currently, I only access the system using an extender, so there is no IR receiver on the PC -- I guess I would have to add one). Is this right?

    Thanks

  •

Yes, that's correct.  I use this one for the IR dongle:

Sometimes you can find these on sale for <$20.....

In reality I use a Harmony as my remote.

  •

excellent, thanks.. I managed to get it all working as I found an old M.C.E. remote and dongle lying around... works well!

Just an aside.  I use an Xbox for place shifting but I chose the Vulkano Flow instead of the Slingbox.  It's only $99 and does a great job.  I was recently at a college football game watching another college football game on my Galaxy Tab tablet using the Vulkano.

Additionally, the app for Android and iOS costs only $12.99, which is much cheaper than Sling Media's app.
