desslok I've been thinking about trying to shove a long paperclip in the back to burn out the fan. I would do the quiet fan mod, but don't want to void my warranty by opening it.

Owner abuse typically voids warranties, too.

I would remove the paperclip of course. I doubt it really needs tha fan anyways functioning as just an MCE.
mack1979Much as I'd love to see essentially another PC being able to play protected content can't see MS getting this passed the music and movie industries.
I think this could very well happen if playback/digital rights were tied to your HomeGroup instead of the device that recorded/downloaded the content. I'm hoping that v2 WHS might play part in enabling this scenario. But until you can playback content easily from other PCs on your home network...Extenders are still the best way to deliver content to your TV. Not to mention with Extenders, it is a locked down device so you don't need to perform disk maintenance, virus scans, etc.
As far as the future of extenders, the fact that Microsoft hasn't come out and said they were dropping the extender platform makes me believe they are working on a 3rd generation.
desslokmack1979 . I'm gonna get rid of my DMAs for xbox if its not unbearably loud. The xbox is god-aweful horrendously loud, and 10 times louder once the DVD drive spins up sounds like a Jet taking off. If the dishwasher or washing machine is on, it drowns out the sound somewhat, but otherwise sounds like my TV is in a windtunnel.

I keep hearing different things on this site. Some say its fine, some say only the Jasper versions are fine, some say its ridiculously loud. I've got the DMA2200 and have in 3 years with 2 DMAs only ever used the DVD drive once, so I don't really care if the xbox is loud for this, nor when playing games, as I'm not buying it for that - that's a perk of the box I should have bought instead of the DMA for about the same price - more power, more uses and same price - such regret!

I did a search for "MCX" and "Media Extender" platform in the WHDC & OEM areas of Microsoft.com and couldn't find any information...at all.
