    ribex:
Hi, I hope someone is still looking at this thread!

I just got an HP3000, and this enclosure has the skinny black strips.

I managed to pull the 1/4" strips out and removed the top aluminum cover.

However, now I'm stymied.  I can't figure out what comes next to get the drive out.  I don't know if I am supposed to remove the other half of the aluminum cover, or something else.  I keep gently prying and tugging at things but I don't want to damage the driive or the enclosure.  Ack!

    Please help :)

    @ribex:

after you have removed the two skinny black strips and the top aluminum cover, you have to now focus on the back plastic part (where you see the fan, usb connector, power, etc.). It is not obvious but there are four screws under the black printed layer on the back. It is affixed to the back with some adhesive. You have to remove this printed layer on either edge to uncover the screw holes. I removed the four screws in order to pry off the back cover. I did not have much success in removing it completely. I did notice, however, that the hard drive is an IDE and not SATA, which is unfortunate for me.

i know this is not a complete solution, but hopefully it will get to one step further and help in figuring out how to remove the drive. good luck.

The enclosures I bought were worthless: the plastic strips on the sides had been super-glued back on and could not be removed with destroying them (as I learned); and they were PATA.

Hey everyone, i noticed this drive on bestbuy online shopping and want it only if its PATA, cause to get a 160 GB PATA is expensive, this would be greatly cheaper, and ill get a free enclosure to put my current 60GB in, do you know how to tell from the part number if its going to be PATA or SATA, i don't want to order online, and not be able to return it?

If the model number has an S after it, like hd3000s - then it is an sata drive

This is all the info it gives me, pretty lame, no way to tell from that i guess

That's an entirely different type of drive. That is the pocket personal drive. this thread is about the regular full sized drive

This was so helpful. Thanks for all of the info. I picked up a HD 1600 for $6.00 at a thrift store and got it working for the price of a $1.00 power cord. Mine is a SATA so i can now change it out for a larger drive. Knowledge is king!

    Gub,

I know that you posted this almost 3 years ago but you saved my A$$...  The USB connection in the external case to the hard drive failed and I have been trying to figure out how to get into this case to remove the hard drive and transfer it to another working case that I have...  I am a photographer and my hd5000s was my backup drive containing over 150,000 pics...  Your pictures were extremely helpful...  This will allow me to recover mine...  Thank you soooooooooooo very Much...

    DaddyDe,

I am in the same situation. My 500gb drive (hd5000s) just stopped being regonized by my computer. I am assuming that it is an usb failure. I just ordered a new 500gb drive from HP. I am hoping to open them both up and put the old drive in the new box. Have you made your transfer yet? How did it go? I agree that the pictures on this board will be a big help. I was wondering how the heck I was going to open the thing.

Glad this post was still up, very helpful.

This post is still very helpful.

I am now able to take apart any one of these enclosures without any traces that it's been opened before and swap out the disk.  It looks like it's not worth it to me to try to swap out the fan; since, very small, high RPM fans inherently make noise no matter how good the fan.  Contrary to what people say, the fan seems like a pretty decent quality fan.

However, maybe someone here might know how critical it is to leave this fan attached and working.  Would it be safe?  Maybe these fans aren't as useful as one might think.

Does anyone have their fan completely disconnected and use their drive normally inside their PC case?

I've been thinking about swapping the factory 2TB HDD with a 3TB Seagate Baracuda HDD.  I'm not sure how much heat they generate.

HELP! Im an audio engineering student and all of my previous music work was done on my HP Media Centre Drive Bay HD - The power supply had fried and my only option was to remove THE HD from the case and now I cant find a case that it will work in.

    Possible Power supply issue? Fan?

    Very Desperate!

Make sure the PC is unplugged... then, Go buy an internal;SATA cable from any store that sells PC accessories and hook the HDD up directly to the sata port inside your computer.  You will also need to hook up your HDD to a spare power cable from inside the PC.  Once you have both cables plugged in, plug the PC back into power and turn it on.  You should then get a new drive letter appear under "My Computer".  Then, copy your data off the disk to another drive.

    Matt,

I got an empty enclosure at Staples. It was a USB connection like the Media Drive is (but via cable to USB). I took the drive out of the Media Bay and put it in the new empty enclosure and it worked great. If you can't find a empty enclosed just buy one with a drive and swap them.

This thread was invaluable!  Exactly what I needed to know in order to open the case without destroying the thing.

The pics gave me the confidence to keep trying even though the plastic side panels were snapped down tight.

    Thanks!
