YARDMAN: what show was that and what were you trying to do?

HBO should allow you to record and possibly burn a DVD, but you can't play the DVR-MS file on another computer/extender or transcode it to a non-protected format.

HBO On-Demand and Pay-per-view may be flagged for "no copies" in which case MCE should have refused to even record it.

One of the things that rollup 2 is supposed to add is viewing of protected content on DRM-compatible devices (Xbox 360 and possibly other extenders w/ firmware updates) Previously, NO extenders could view protected content.

FYI, The shows that gave me the "Copy Protected" while recording didn't show as such once they were finished, and dcut was able to cut and convert them to WMV. Maybe it's just MCE's way of preventing other applications from messing with the file while it's still being created!
If you can't see the fnord, it can't eat you.

Hmm, I was able to schedule a recording of Rome on my Ultimate TV. Guess I'll see if it actually records in 2 days....

The Ultimate TV might be old enough that it doesn't honor these flags...the last firmware upgrade was like 2 years ago....

I could then dump it to dvd via Svideo...or hook up my ultimate TV to MCE (redundant, I know. But if it records copy protected content.....)

    Hi all,

We found that problem too. When watching any HBO channel, after a few seconds we would get the protected content error too. You don't even have to be recording a show, just watching it. This is with Time Warner cable in NYC.

I've asked MS for help and we'll see what they say.

"EDITED: Sorry, the show I meant was rome"

I've been recording Rome with roll up 1 with no troubles.

asked my coworkers a little more about this.  all are on time warner cable with either the time warner dvr or a tivo.  All have issues with protected and hbo.

Considering hbo is a time warner station, good luck getting this resolved.  Hopefully its not going to spread and they are just using their own customers to figure out the complaints from it.

Let's see if everyone has the same setup. Would everyone be able to post what cable company, what capture card and what VGA card they're using?

    1. Time Warner Cable (NYC)

    2. Hauppauge 500MCE or 150MCE

    3. Nvidia 6600GT

I've just noticed my first "Copy Protected" show on DVB-T (FreeView) here in the UK. However I was allowed to record the show.

The missus records "Home and Away" which is shown on Channel Five at 18:00 every evening and repeated at 12:30 the next afternoon. Last night's episode recorded as normal but MCE decided to record the repeat today which it normally doesn't do. I have checked some of the 18:00 shows for this week and non of them have "Copy Protected" in their listings so I don't know really what is going off here!

I am assuming it is a mistake on BDS's part / bug in MCE as it shouldn't have recorded and the original air date was shown as the 27th (Today) and not yesterday.

I have enclosed a screen shot for anyone that is interested.

Update: I am able to watch the show on other PC's in the house - not tried writting it to DVD yet.

    Kind Regards

I've noticed this message also while a show is recording. But once the recording is done, the info for the show no longer says "Copy Protected" and the show is able to burn to DVD.

Has the protection message disappeared now that the recording finished?

  •
Yep - The "Copy Protected" message has vanished from the recorded program's data.

Yeah, that's wierd. Today, no problems with HBO. Yesterday there were. Also, I noticed that HBO shows did not have a Copy Protected message when you look at more info. Something's afoot. Let's hope that it stays this way.

All channels, including the premium channels (HBO, etc.) can be recorded in ordinary MPEG if you use the Hauppauge WinTV-PVR USB2.  However, this is NOT true for the Hauppauge PVR-mce models.  They are built to integrate with Windows MCE and they defer to the Windows .dvr-ms file format.

I'm taking my PVR-500mce back to BestBuy tomorrow — and am keeping my PVR USB2.  Some of the other Hauppauge cards also record in MPEG, but not the MCE cards!  Unfortunately, Hauppauge does not make this clear in their product descriptions.

Perhaps this is the MS way to fix the problem until they have a hotfix to fix it correctly
