I finally got it to work. If you have two MCE PCs and you want to have one PC access the recorded TV from another while using the MCE interface, I have documented how to do it. I have attached a PDF with the instructions that worked for me. I hope it works for you. Good Luck!!!

Crap, it says I do not have permission to add an attachment. Any help here? I have added screen shots into the PDF document so I do not think I can get is all to show within this post.

Sharing Recorded TV on your MCE PC with second MCE PC

    - Using your PC as an Extender -

On the Server PC (PC with the recorded TV)

    1. Share your recorded TV folder giving full control to everyone (right mouse click \ Properties \ Sharing…). Name the share "Recorded TV”.
    2. Click Start, Run, and open gpedit.msc.  Navigate under Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\Security Options, and change "Network access:  Let Everyone permissions apply to anonymous users" to “enabled”. Also add “Network access: Shares that can be accessed anonymously” to include “Recorded TV” (see below).

Picture should be here but can't insert it

    1. Make sure “Windows Media Connect” 2.0 (WMC) is loaded and running on the Server. Make sure you share the folder in WMC that contains the recorded TV content and that you automatically approve devices in WMC.

On the Client PC (Second PC that wants access to the recorded TV from the first)

    1. Open regedit, and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media Center\Service\Recording.  Update the "WatchedFolders" key with the value “\\grandroom\Recorded TV” (see below)

Picture should be here but can't insert it

    1. Have both machines on the same network. On the Client PC, open IE and enter \\grandroom\recorded tv to make sure you have access to the content on the server PC. Click on a show just to make sure it plays.
    2. Make sure “Windows Media Connect” 2.0 (WMC) is loaded and running on the Client PC. It does not matter what folders you share.

Adding “My TV” to PCs without a tuner

If you do not have a tuner installed on your Client PC, you will not have a “My TV” option in MCE. Without the “My TV” option, you can not get to the recorded TV content from the Server PC (unless you just use Windows Media Player outside of the MCE shell)

Buy or borrow a tuner to connect to your PC. Set up MCE with the tuner (no antenna or TV signal is required to get it installed and showing the “My TV” option in MCE. At this point, you can either remove the tuner or just leave it in. MCE will continue to expose the “My TV” option so you can get to the recorded content on the Server PC. The first time you go to the “Recorded TV” option, it will take a few seconds to populate the recorded TV shows that are on the server PC.

There are Registry hacks that will expose “My TV”, but the ones I have tried crashes MCE when you try to play the Server PC content.

    Other issues to watch

Once you can see the recorded TV on the Client PC (in TV/Recorded TV), your graphics solution is a big part of the stability of the system. I had to update the graphics driver to the latest version to get rid of blue screens. I am using the G965 integrated graphics solution from Intel. Using an external graphics card could help you if you have this problem.

I also can not play ATSC recorded content that is recorded on my ATI HD tuner card. I assume all tuner cards will have their own quirks on sharing content in this manner.

I have the latest builds and updates for MCE as of 10/22/06 on both machines and it does work.

There is no warranty, guarantee, or promise that this will work for you. I put this information together from other information I have found on the Internet. It works for me and I hope it works for you. Good Luck.

    lav,

What's the reasoning for having Windows Media Connect 2.0 installed and running?  What does that appear to help with?

    Cheers,
    Andrew

Not sure, but it will not populate the content in the client MCE platform without it loaded. It might not even have to be running. One more thing, I am using the Intel Viiv 1.5.2 software version that also has a media server. Not sure if that ties in or not. I don't think so.

I am having some trouble getting WMC 2.0 to run at all. I installed WMP11 which supposedly includes WMC2.0 and WMP sees the share, the files, and plays everything fine. No shortcut was added for WMC2.0 in my Programs, but I ran wmccfg.exe manually from Program Files > Windows Media Connector, but it never fires up.

So, I downloaded the installer for WMC2.0 and re-installed it per the "troubleshooting guide" for WMC 2.0...nothing. I have tried to re-install it many times and I still can't seem to get that damn thing running. I cannot see the recorded shows that reside on the mothership MCE box from inside Media Center My TV on the 2nd MCE box.  I can see them and play them just browsing around normally with Explorer.  I can even tell it I want to play the recorded tv file in MCE and it will fire up MCE and play it.  Anyone have a problem like this?

Just curious...how is this different from the Share Recorded TV program?
  •

The Windows Media Connect program will reside in the Control Panel after you install it. You might have to switch to "Classic View" to see it listed. Try starting it there.

BTW, I can send you the PDF with the pictures in the instructions if you like. Just send me an email and I will send it to you in a reply... just in case you are not getting a step right.

I think it may actually be working now! I didn't necessarily follow your instructions because I had previously used the Share Recorded TV program which is a bit easier than editing the registry myself. What I did take from your instructions was the fact that Windows Media Connect has to be running on all PCs. This was not the case for me before last night. Basically, I have three MCE PCs in my house. Two are mine and one is my roommates. I've been wanting to share RTV between all machines and have them all update once recordings were finished. This was working on my Dell PC, which is the second one I have set up. I have my Xbox 360 connected to my custom built MCE PC and it was the one that wasn't pulling in the RTV from the other PCs. The reason for that is because Media Connect wasn't installed on the other PCs. Last night I installed Windows Media Player 11 and changed all of the sharing properties within WMP 11 to allow all shares and now my custom built machine is pulling in RTV from my Dell. This is very exciting! Thanks for the help!

Well, now that I have both of my MCE boxes stable for the minute, I am going to get MP11 put on both and see if I can get Windows Media Connect 2 to play nice.

<edit>How long does it typically take for the recorded tv to show on one box vs. the other?</edit>

i dont suppose you have found a work around for the tv card installation?

Anyway of getting mce to display recorded tv menu without installing a card first?

    thanks
