I'm gonna be making a few of these cables soon and wondering if anyone in the UK is interested in buying some so that I can offset the cost of obtaining parts.

The cable should work with all gfx card (not just ATI) since I will be putting in a sync convertor to obtain the csync signal from the hsync and vsync.

I'll be basing the convertor on the nexus VGA to SCART project.  I'll also wire in a 3.5 jack so that you get sound.  In addition, I'll wire the 5v from pin 9 on the VGA to the pin g8 and 16 on the SCART to allow correct signal detection.

Can I just say that anyone who is currently using an S-Video connection should consider the OP's offer. I made my own VGA-to-SCART cable (although as I have an ATI card I didn't need to generate my own composite sync signal) and I noticed a significant improvement in quality over S-Video, and widescreen works much better.

You may still need to use something like Powerstrip to get timings that work for your TV but once set up it works a treat. The additional 5v signal is good for those TVs that "auto-detect" a signal on the SCART input and switch to it automatically.

This is all my opinion of course! Smile [:)]  BTW cwl999, there was a recent topic from someone who might require such a cable.

    Nicely put.

My current MCE2K5 running on an ASUS Pundit-R is connected nicely using a plain straight-thru VGA to SCART cable.  The integrated ATI gfx chip works great when you get a good powerstrip setting.

Unfortunately, my new Vista Media Center (sic) is using a fanless NVIDIA 6600GT and hence I cannot reuse my old cable.

I've tried everything possible to get a good correct signal from the s-video but alas the picture quality was poops (and didn't support widescreen).

I'm currently guesstimating around £15 delivered (UK mainland) and discount on multiple.

Obviously the more interest the cheaper it gets.

BTW, I don't plan on doing this as my day job so they'll be made as a batch at the same time.

In terms of timeframe, if the interest is good, I'll get components to do 20 odd cables and should be able to do the cables within a few days after.

I plan to order the stuff today and hopefully get it before weekend and do the hard work over the weekend.

    I am interested.

Let me know if you go ahead, how to pay, I presume paypal would be OK.

    Cheers

I've ordered enough parts to make 15 cables.  Dibbs on the first one!!!

    Paypal is fine.
  •
out of interest, where did you order from.?? I work for a component distributor and may be able to do a deal on the components (i'm sure we could work something out). Do you have a BOM? Cheers

    The parts have arrive today.

Hopefully, if I have enough time over the weekend, I'll get all 15 cables done and tested.

Once thats done, I'll compile a list of interested people and get the ball rolling.

    HI All

I've soldered all 15 PCBs yesterday.

Made the first cable, forgot to wire the blanking wire, oops, I've fix that later.

Second cable went faster but wired the H and V the wrong way.  Little soul searching and fixed it.

In terms of the difference between a striaght ATI VGA to SCART cable, you need to ensure that powerstrip has H and V syncs as negative and dsiable composite sync.  The exact same timings worked like a charm.

Anyway, I've supply FULL details of the schematics of the cable and relevant powerstrip timings for those interested in purchasing so that they can make an informed decison before commiting to anything.

I remind you that this cable ISN'T a plug and play solution.  You will need to use PowerStrip if your driver cannot supply a PAL compatible signal.  You will most likely need to have a second computer and use VNC to tweak the timings.

Any question you peeps need answering should be asked.  We're all here to help.
