When I press the green button (or Guide button) on my remote and MCE is not already running, MCE will load and start up. How do I prevent this??  I have turned off the (obvious) Media center services (MCE Extender, MCE Scheduler and MCE Receiver) but this does not do it. It appears there still is a service with a not so obvious name that I must disable. Anyone know which???

Don't push the button?? Stick out tongue [:P]

Seriously, look for a service with eHome in it, am at work at the moment so can't check myself, but have a look.

    ....

When I press the button to make MCE start, MCE starts!

    Help!

seriously tho, quit pressing the button if you don't want MCE to start

ps, why would not want it to start?

The only none obvious service I see running that is related to Media Center is the eHome Infrared Receiver (USBCIR) service.  It is a kernel driver service so you won't be able to change the startup type using Services.msc.  You can disable and stop it using the below commands in an Administrative command prompt:

    1. sc config usbcir start= disabled
    2. sc stop usbcir

I have not tested this so use at your own risk

Because for one, I have GBPVR running &  if I press the Guide button for instance, MCE fires up.

If you haven't figured this out already, just remove the below registry key and tgb won't launch Media Center

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]

    ehTray.exe

If you really want to completely disable MCE, you can do it using the group policy editor (gpedit.msc) - it's in there somewhere, I don't remember exactly where (not on a Vista machine right now), but let me know if you want exact instructions.
    Just my $0.02.

Try not to be such a smart ass, you may not know every situation.

For example, I hit this thread in a search because when I push the green button on my remote to control my WMC HTPC, it fires up WMC on my laptop - VERY annoying when I'm playing Warcraft and my GF presses the guide button....

    1. sc config usbcir start= disabled
    2. sc stop usbcir

That didn't work on my Win 7 Home Premium Laptop

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]

    ehTray.exe

No such key on Win 7

I could find no such services in Win 7

If you really don't want it in Win 7 you can remove it from Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Programs and Features and on the left hand side select "Turn Windows features on or off" then under the Media option uncheck Media Center.
