    Hello,

I've been trying to get my MCE in standby when Media Center is not in use and to resume my system from standby with the remote controller. This is working perfectly now (thanks to MCE Standby Tool), but there is still one problem:

When there are programmed recordings, my system doesn't resume automatically from standby, so there are no new recordings at all when I return to my MCE later on the day...

Can anyone tell me how I can fix this problem, so my system resumes automatically when it is supposed to start recording?

    Thanks!

have you actually turned s3 on in your bios?

have you enabled it to go to s3 in power settings?

    does hibernate work?
  •
Yes, I have turned on S3 in my bios and in the power settings. Hibernates works fine too... The problem isn't going in standby, and i can resume my mce from standby with my remote control/keyboard/mouse, but when my mce is supposed to record a scheduled program, it doesn't come out of standby by itself...
  •
    hrm
it's usually the other way around ;)  (it'll come out of standby to record, but waking via remote is a pain)

have you looked at the standby tool? google up MST, or even just search this site for it.  I had 1 asus mobo that wouldn't behave properly, and MST fixed it up rightaway

Yes, I have MCE Standby Tool installed. That's the program that made my standby actually working... but when my system is in standby, it won't resume from it when it is supposed to start recording :S

No such thing as 2002. In media center, go to settings to check the MCE version. 2002 is the windows version.

    dumb question

do you have a usb mouse plugged into it all the time?

my bedroom pvr always does dumb stuff when I have a mouse plugged in, and works great when not

@ Tikker: what is a dumb question? :P I actually do have a usb mouse plugged in all the time, but even when i unplug my usb mouse, my system won't resume from standby for a scheduled recording.

I have exactly the same problem running Windows 7. No problem getting the computer to sleep, nor resuming it by pressing remote one button. But it doesn't wake up automatically to start a scheduled recording. Only thing missing to make my mediacenter perfect!

    Is there a solution?

  •
Not a solution but you could try a BIOS setting (if available) to wake computer at defined time (eg I have my PC turn on at 7am every day so that if there was a power outage or it goes off for some reason it would come on next day). At least this would show you that the BIOS was working ok. Also in your BIOS power management make sure that you set everything to "allow to wake form standby" - you can always turn them off one-by-one afterwards. In MCE standby tool on "Sleep state" tab you should have "S3 - Standby" selected. On USB tab trying ticking all three items. Try your motherboard manufacturers website for latest drivers and look to see if there is a BIOS update that specifically mentions this problem.

More issues here with Windows 7 32-bit with resume (wake up) from standby on Dell Dimension 4600i (Media Center Edition).

    Here's the summary:

Hibernate (S4): Windows 7 can hibernate automatically, and resume manually fine. But does not resume automatically for scheduled tasks, including TV recording.

Sleep (S1 or S3): Windows 7 seems to go into sleep (S1 or S3) fine, but upon manual resume, machine reboots instead, and displays a screen asking if you want to start Windows in Safe Mode. Machine does not automatically resume for scheduled tasks.

Hybrid sleep (S3 + S4): Windows 7 seems to go into S3+S4 ok, but upon manual resume, machine actually resumes from S4, not S1 or S3. This is consistent with Sleep mode behavior above. Machine does not automatically resume for scheduled tasks.

S1 or S3 can be selected in the BIOS together with MCE Standby Tool (using Win7 beta).

I had very similar problems with Windows XP MCE 2005 SP2.

I'm using a workaround which is to leave machine on all the time! I guess this is how "green" Dell and M$ are (another topic).

The machine is about 5 years old, but still running very well as a WMC with a few upgrades (video/tv card, hdd, ram, cpu). Win7 performance index gives CPU 4.3, RAM 4.5, Graphics 5.9, 3D 4.9, HDD 5.2. I have installed CoreAVC, ffdshow, Haali, AC3filter, DirectVobSub, Quicktime Alternative, Real Alternative(will install if needed) and Win7DSFilterTweaker(a must!!). That's pretty much all is needed for playing everything in MC, quite a simple setup compared to the Bible out there. I'd detail the simple configurations for those apps but they would make this post too long! Maybe another thread.

    Oh a couple more things...

I doubt if there's a solution to this problem, but if you can get it to automatically resume from standby, please POST!!!  My hunch is something to do with Dell's BIOS. Machine was shipped sitting on S1 in the BIOS. I think S1 used to work, but you had to install Windows XP in that mode for sleep/resume to work. And if you do that, and later changes to S3 in BIOS, WinXP still would not go into S3 (i.e. fan stays on). That's a feature of XP. Not sure if it applies to W7.

Because of Dell's lack of follow up support on updating BIOS and getting some very annoying issues fixed, I have vowed to never buy another Dell. I had good experience with IBM/Lenovo, but they are more $. I'm currently happy with my Acer laptop which seems to be somewhere in between Dell and Lenovo in features and reliability.

    Cheers.
