I am running Vista Ultimate on my DEC Z558 and it works great.  Considering upgrading to Windows 7 but concerned about drivers / issues with old hardware.  Everything on the system is OEM except the DVD drive and have 4gb ram installed.  Any one moved to the new OS?

Runs great for me on my Z557.  I only have 2GB of RAM installed.  Use the Vista driver for the Front Panel Display.  The wireless card will not work.

Do you mind if I ask why the wireless card doesn't work? Does the Vista driver not function? Is there anything available from the manufacturer? gerneric driver?  I'v thought about the upgrade, but if it's not as close to out of the box -install and go, I'm not too keen to do it. I'd rather not spend a weekend gettign things working again (which is why I skipped Vista).

BTW, is TV quality any better out of the box? I had to tweak the hell out of XP2005 tv quality to get it clear.

Where do you get the Vista drive for the front panel display?

Search posts, someone posted to direct link on Hp website for Z565 front panel display driver for Vista. Works fine for me.

I have a Z558 system as well and am considering upgrading it to Windows 7 as well.  My question is would it be better to take it to Vista Ultimate or Windows 7 Ultimate?  For those that are running their Z558 (or other Z???) on Vista or Windows 7, does the unit still wake up out of standby mode to record your scheduled shows and then go back to standby like it does in MC2005?  I love my Z558 and I would love to take it to one of the newer OS's but I don't want to lose any of it's functionality that it already has.  I'm interested in hearing what those of you had to do to get it to work with either Vista Ult. or Windows 7 Ult. and which one would be easier.

I can't give you any info on standby as I leave my z555 on all the time, but I can tell you that I tried upgrading it to Vista and the performance was absolutely horrible. The z555 power supplies can only handle 1GB of RAM, which is all I have in mine. Since Vista is such a memory hog, it rendered the machine unusable. I then installed Windows 7 and its great--even better performance than I had running XP, and I've had no loss of functionality. Even got the front panel display to work with the Vista driver and a little tweaking.
