Yes, indeed it is (actually is a VIIV compliant box).  I am not using the machine as a media center, nor do I have the media center extender software installed on that machine.

From researching the web, I'm understanding the application that binds port 3776 on a Media Center machine is the Media Center Extender Service - and I have no use for this service on this machine (needs to be on the main media center PC, and it is).  So I have stopped the Media Center Extender Service from Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Component Services > Services (Local) and the error has gone away (i.e., when I press Listen I get Windows firewall pop-up, not a .NET error).  I have also changed the Startup Type for the service on the General tab to Manual which hopefully will mean it will not start unless I tell it to on subsequent reboots or logins to other user accounts.

Fingers crossed - will report back results later.

One more hurdle to overcome - my "always on" machine has several user accounts on it.  The machine can be "always on", but usually its not logged on to any specific account.  So the question is - how to get WakeUpMCE to run in Listen mode straight from windows startup without having a user logged on (which would be addressed by simply putting a shortcut into Startup folder)?

Doing some research I concluded one logical way to do this is to create a service from your .exe and have it startup Automatic.  So I created a service from WakeUpMCE.exe using sc.exe, but I cannot get it to start automatically in listen mode.  I can get the app to start, but not in listen mode - I tried putting /listen in the "start parameters" entry on the service's General tab for the service I created - did not work.

kingwr - Any advice?  Am I on the right path or a dead end?

Does anyone have advice regarding how to make WakeUpMCE.exe startup in Listen mode without requiring a user to logon, i.e., make the app startup automatically into Listen mode on Windows bootup?

My attempt at creating a service out of the .exe using sc.exe proved unable to use the command line parameter /Listen.

I would greatly appreciate guidance if anyone is knowledgeable regarding how to create a service from a .exe that can utilize a command line parameter in its startup.  Joe

    Hi,

I had the same issue with the DMA2200.
I wasn't able to wake up the Media Center Pc if the extender was turned on.
I tried a tool named "WakeupMce" which listens for broadcasts on port 3776 and sents a WOL packet to the MC's max address. This didn't work in my situation so I created an application that does this.

Basically the script will startup the MC pc within 30 secs after the Extender is started up.

    Requirements:
A pc/server that is always running with Windows XP, 2003 server, 2008 server.
.NET Framework 3.x (will be installed if needed by the installer)

You can find the details here:
    http://www.epy-technology.nl/media_center.htm

You can install the application to run as a service on the system account so you won't need to be logged on to the system.
    (with the windows resource kit)

You can't use a DMA2200 on MCE2005. Have you tried it with the v1 extenders?

Bumping a really old thread here, but a question: I still use this little WakeUpMCE app (haven't upgraded my setup since it still suits my needs)... but it has always had an issue: the computer will not restart/shutdown while it is running, so each time I want to restart I have to manually close WakeUpMCE first.

Might there be some simple solution for this?

    Hi phreaker

I just released another tool called PcapWakeMCE on Google Code.

It should do the same job for you as WakeUpMCE but not prevent restart/shutdown and because it is open source software it is for free. WinPcap must be installed to run the tool. It uses WinPcap to listen for all packets on the LAN and if a packet is captured sent from the MAC address of the extender it will wake the Mediacenter PC. Therefore already the extender's DHCP request will trigger the WoL packet to be sent out.

I coded a tool for linux cause the only PC running all the time is my linux router. It listens for UDP broadcasts on port 3776 and sends the magic packet broadcast with the media center MAC specified on command line. btw: I copied source code from all over the web without giving credit. Mostly from tutorials. Source included: http://rapidshare.com/files/385019700/mcewold.zip Cheers hanshans
