Hi, all. Relative noob here and haven't been able to find a solution to this online or elsewhere, so thought I'd come to the GB source! (I searched through forum topics here and did not see that this has already been addressed...if so, I apologize and am grateful if you can point me to that thread.)

My problem is "Tasks" is not found on my Media Center start screen - so how can I set up my Media Center Extender?

My software version is XP Media Center Editions 2005, Version 5.1.2715,2773, Update Rollup 2.

For a little background, in case this is relevant, months ago, when I first obtained my Media Center Extender, I did have it working with my computer so "Tasks" must have been available then, right? (I don't recall the steps I took to get it set up with my pc.) I did recently have to completely restore my OS and all software due to a HD crash around Christmastime but I used the recovery install disks supplied by the pc manufacturer, so the software should've been ok. At any rate, anyone know what I can do to fix this?

Thanks so much for any help!

Did you ever find a solution? I have the same problem, i need to reinstall my extender so i can get transcode 360 working, but I have no tasks option, i have been searching everywhere for an answer

Nope. And yours is the ONLY reply I've ever even received...kinda makes me think no one out there has a clue about this. Actually, I haven't been pursuing this lately. I put the Extender in the closet rather than dust around it every week. If I ever do tackle the problem again and find a solution, I'll let you know. I thought about contacting Microsoft, but I think I saw something online somewhere that they no longer support the software....not sure. But good luck and hope you get it fixed! Thanks for the message.

    Hi,

With MCE2005 I believe this menu option is called Settings rather than Tasks. Been a while since I used XP though so I could be wrong.

What is definite though is that with MCE2005 you need to install something extra to get the extender extending, it's not built in like it is with Vista and 7. See here:

Hi, and thanks for the message. I have gone through every sub-menu under Settings and found nothing to enable the Media Center Extender. The strange thing is, I know for sure that there was a Tasks option on the Start menu at one time, but when I had to re-install all software from the OEM disks due to a hard disk crash, the Tasks option was no longer there. (I did have my Extender working before the HD crash, and I remember that the set-up went exactly as the instructions that came with it said...Start menu/Tasks.) At any rate...I couldn't find anything under Settings that helped.

Thanks for the link you provided, too, but since that is XBox.com, I'm sure that everything there has to do with XBox. I have a Linksys Extender....not an XBox, so I doubt anything there will help me.

I am grateful for your attempts, though!

There is a post here that says you can use the Xbox software with the Linksys. Only have a 360 myself so cannot give an opinion.

This page from Linksys may also be useful.

I have had to re-install my software due to hd crash twice now, so maybe that has something to do with it. But i already have my xbox connected as an extender, what I want to do is remove it as one. So maybe just uninstall the media extender software and then reinstall it? Dog, the media center extender software is for any extenders, not just xboxs, at least I think. So i would follow the instructions on the xbox page and install the software, and it should recognize your extender
