Somewhat reassuring!
I would love to see it faster, with support for very large libraries, youtube, customization, better visualizations, integrated web browsing, netflix, hulu (just buy it MS), spotify, syncronization with iTunes, a smart auto-zoom...basically incorporate the things that people hack into it now. I never want to have to screw with the registry to get this to work as the center of my digital life.
Media Cener has already been officially confirmed for Windows 8 but it will have no new features, and will be marked as "Deprecated", meaning no support and no future updates. Essentially they are killing it.

I didn't read that in the post you linked. Is there another source or is this just a guess?
XPS9100, 24 Gig, 4eSata Tower Ceton (SA-800 M) TAs T-W W Valley (LA)--Win7 Pro, 1 XP-Pro, 3-Win7 Hom Prem, 1 Macintosh X (10.4.11), 4-HP 280N extender, Linksys DMA2100, 2-DMA2200 Promise Ns4300 Raid 5
I have yet to see any official statement from Microsoft saying WMC will have no new features and will be marked as depracated. If such a statement exists, I would like to read it.

Ian Dixons comments make very good sense. Why would Media Center exist in Windows 8 in its current form. Just make an applet for Recorded/Live TV/Guide (in 10-foot form, just like the Metro Start Menu). It could then be placed in the start menu with music, movie libraries, photo playback, Netflix, Youtube, whatever. Windows would include back-end services for TV tuner, guide data, recording schedules, etc., supporting current driver infrastructure for tuner/capture cards If these services could be remoted, then you would have Softsled as well.
...But..., man, what am I thinking. Why would Microsoft ever do something that makes that much sense.
I totally agree kingwr. I don't think anything that you are describing would be that difficult. And it would totally fit in with the Microsoft vision of three screens and the cloud. Time will tell, however. Less than a year until Win8 release.
I agree with last two posts. My prediction is a big coming out party at CES that shows us all the stuff they haven't shown like yet new media functions. I hope the have something that knocks socks off appletv and AirPlay. I hope that it integrates with new Xbox and Zune services. I hope..... [share your hope]
5+ years membership and not a charter member - what gives!
Any news on the Public Preview that is now live? Everyone is posting screen shots but I have yet to see a single Media Center related one.
There should be a section of the Windows 8 store for Media Center apps, so we can buy/sell our wares and use Visual Studio 2011 to develop them. That way we can better integrate our current 'hacks' into media center as you put it.
I guess I am more curious as to whether MCE8 is just MCE7 fixed to work with Windows 8 or adds some new features, Metro like interface etc.
I guess the dream of a "TV App" in metro is simply too hard for MS to imagine. I would be very happy within the video section having "live TV" and "recorded TV" next to the Netflix and Verison/Redbox apps of the world.
XBOX, Windows 8 MCE and Ceton living in peace finally.....
Oh well. It was always nice to want something.
Media Center excluded from Windows 8 'Consumer Preview' http://t.co/8XPvg5uW (link will take you to theverge.com, where it is currently on the front page, but theverge.com isn't working well for me right now).

This is not good news if Windows 8 is planned to GA later on this year. Is this the nail in the coffin for Windows Media Center?

Apparently we are a loud bunch, as the BuildWindows8 team tweeted this:

Good grief. We said "Media Center will definitely be part of Windows 8" inhttp://blogs.msdn.com/b/b8/archive/2011/09/02/reflecting-on-our-first-conversations-part-2.aspx http://pic.twitter.com/6oNUOlHv
