I'm all for Vista only. Since you really have a development advantage with the new framework, it doesn't make sense to code something that could potentially hinder forward progress. To make those people with 2005 happy, I suggest making sure that the plugin is opensource so that someone can carry the torch for them.

As of right now my plan of action is to develop the first version in WPF. This will cover MCE2005 and Vista. As for the extenders I’m not sure... I am doing this because it is the fastest way to get something out. I think that the next version will be in the Windows Media Center Presentation Layer which should cover VMC and ExVMC. As far as I know the HTML interface is not really an option right now. Might look into its full capabilities later.

So what does this mean as far as support?

Version 1.0 - WPF
 - MCE2005
 - VMC
 - ExVMC - May be. not sure how it really works.

Version 2.0 - Windows Media Center Presentation
 - VMC
 - ExVMC

Have you decided on the licenseing you'll be applying to this software?

Will it be open-source so that others might be able to improve it? Being a full-time programmer (and curious by nature), I'd love to take a peek "under the hood" one it's up and running.

This looks really cool.  Keep up the good work.  I also would be interested in seeing some source code if you are willing to share.

Although I currently use XP MC2005, I would be fine with Vista-only.  I'm planning on upgrading in the next six months, and this would further incent me to do so.  Any chance you'd be able to create a plug-in for Joost too?

Ditto for me. I would be happy with it initially being Vista only, but I can wait if I have to. Just having it at all is a good thing so I'm not complaining.

I'd definitely vote for an interface that supports both (MCE 2005, and VMC).  There still are A LOT of users on MCE 2005.  I know MANY, MANY people still unwilling, some unable, to upgrade to VISTA yet. 

I vote for an interface that lets you interact with the program/service.  Also if it can deliver beer to the couch for me, that would be great.  

Can't wait to see this, gobanjoboy!   I'm a willing and halfway able tester on Vista MCE if you need one.

because of this....  Windows Media Center Presentation Layer

you cant do the presentation layer on 2005 and it flat out doesnt work as well.... just look at mymovies for a addon that does it the "old way" still.  people are assuming the initial version will have to use the gimped way on vista when it would use the presentation layer and function better for us vista folks.

that said i would love to try something like this out.  it would be sweet to get this on the 360 extender.
