I'm having some issues with incorrect recording time and I know TV pack 2008 solves this problem but has given me many other problems so I went back to SP1.

So I noticed there is a way to fix the incorrect recording time with DVRMSToolbox and FixDVRMSDuration. So I installed DVRMSToolbox with FixDVRMSDuration but it doesn't work yet.

This is what I did,

Set up a batch like this:

3. Edit the batch file so the "set name" line contains where your recorded TV is stored.
4. Edit the batch file so the "set fixedfile" line points to where you want to temporarily store the "fixed" file.
5. Edit the batch file so the second last line points to where you put the FixDVRMSDuration.exe file.
6. Start DVRMStoMPEG Settings (from the DVRMSToolbox start menu).
7. Edit the "Find Commercials in DVR-MS" action.
8. At the very bottom, after "Write commercial spans as xml", add a new command "Durrant.Plugins.Run External".
9. Configure this command so the "ProcessName" points to your "C:\Utilities\FixDurAndReplace.bat" file and set "ArgumentsContext" to ""%InputFile%"" (including a single pair of double quotes around the %InputFile%).
From now on, every recording will be tested for length and if it is out by more than 1% (the number at the end of the FixDVRMSDuration command line is the allowable duration error), it will be repaired and then moved to replace the original recording.
I'm not certain what causes this, but once in a blue moon (roughly 1 out of every 100 "fixed" recordings) the move will fail because the file is in use, even if you are not watching it.  If you watch a show and find the duration is wrong, this probably happened (you can pull out your mouse and manually move the file and replace the messed up file).

I see in my recorded TV list on the latest recording there is an edl file so it must do something but the incorrect time issue isn't solved. When I try to do this manually with the gui I get this error.

For some reason a double set of quotes is being placed around the file name when it is called from DVRMSToolbox.

Examine your "Find Commercials in DVR-MS" action and look at the command you added.  The "ArgumentsContext" should only have a single pair of quotes "InputFile".

Ok, removing the quotes helped, the process starts now but when the process is done the dvr-ms and edl file will be deleted and the original recording stays in the recorded TV list. This only happens with recording with incorrect time issue.

Is there a way to create a filter that does the fix time issue with Videoredo Quickstream fix. This method also fixes the incorrect time issue.

I like the way DVRMStoolbox does it with the FixDVRMSDuration filter because it all goes automaticly but it seems not to be working.

I can not help you with your specific question but I can suggest a possible alternative (based on what I think I know about your situation)

I use Dirmon2+comskip+VRD on my VMC recorded dvr-ms files to get commercial free shows with a .mpg file extension. I watch those shows using my network media players and with my MediaSmart Connect extender (VMC). The process is semi-automatic. Commercial detection starts automatically when the dvr-ms recording completes. I then manually (takes 15-30secs per 1 hr show) confirm the commercial cuts(VRD), batch process (VRD) to the desired folders. These files are .mpg and show up in my VMC Video Library.

BTW VRD does a QSF when it cuts the commercials, a seperate QSF is NOT required.

I don't want my recordings to be converted to mpg. DVR-MS is just fine with me but I wonder why the fixed recording is deleted instead of being moved back to Recorded TV folder.

Yesterday I recorded 4 shows and noticed only 2 of them has been processed and the other 2 recording don't have an xml or edl file. When I watch those recording there is a popup no commercial file has been found , do you want to create one now or something like that. If I choose yes still nothing happens. These recordings didn't have time issues.

Could you post another log file from a recording that has an incorrect duration.

If you examine the script that I wrote, it doesn't have anything to do with edl files at all.  Also there are no delete commands so it shouldn't be deleting the repaired recording.  All it does is move it to replace the original file (the original file DOES get replaced by the repaired file).

The way it is supposed to work is:

1. The batch file is called for each a recording.
2. If the file has an incorrect duration, FixDVRMSDuration creates a repaired dvr-ms file in the temporary directory that has the correct duration.
3. If a "repaired file" is produced, the batch file then moves it to the original Recorded TV location, replacing the original (screwed up) recording.  If the original file is in use or locked for any reason, the move will not be performed and both files will remain.

Is it possible that everything is actually working the way it is supposed to?  Note that the repaired file ends up replacing the original recording so it is supposed to disappear from the temporary folder.  Also note that if the system was relatively busy, sometimes Vista doesn't update the recording length right away in file explorer.  If a recording still shows a short duration, right click on it and have a look at the properties to confirm the duration (or simply watch it in Media Center and see if it is fixed).

If you really want to modify the batch file to use a different repair program it would be fairly straight forward.  Figure out the command line you want to use and then replace the fixDVRMSDuration.exe line in my batch file with your custom command line.  Personally I find fixDVRMSDuration works very well and haven't been left with a recording with an incorrect duration for a very long time.

Looking at this log, it looks like you have somehow deleted both the find commercials action as well as deleted the fixduration action.  For whatever reason, the find commercials commands were never executed, nor was the FixDuration batch file run.

Your "Find Commercials in DVR-MS" profile should look like the following when you edit it:

Throttle DVRMStoMPEG
Get Video Information
Find Commercials in file
Write commercial spans as xml
Run C:\Utilities\FixDuration.bat "%InputFile%"

This is simply the original "Find Commercials in DVR-MS" profile with the extra "Run" command added to the very end of it.

One additional suggestion:

I noticed you placed both your batch file and the fixDVRMSDuration.exe file in your C:\Windows folder.  Personally I don't recommend placing custom code or batch files here, unless they are specifically for use with the OS.

It probably doesn't make any difference in your case, but the windows installation folder has restrictive permissions so a regular use cannot simply write to it.  Also Vista has protection code that ensures files located in the windows folder are not modified.

My personal preference is to create a C:\Utilities folder with wide open permissions for all users.  The advantage to this over the regular user folder is the path length is short (some batch scripts won't work properly with very long path lengths).

Ok, I will move the exe and bat files to the Utilities folder and see if this solves it.

The "Find Commercials in DVR-MS" profile looks just like yours only I had C:\Windows\FixDuration.bat.

I will test this later today and post here if it's working or not.

I moved all files to C:\Utilities but still having the problem.

Most recordings I tested were replaced like it should but yesterday a test recording was deleted again.

I have Diskeeper Undelete Server so I can get the recordings back but still wondering why the recording is deleted.

The recording has been processed but for some reason a second file has been made.

example: I recorded Hotel as a test recording and the duration was incorrect so the profile tries to fix it. the original recording is Hotel__05_12_2008_07_46_02.dvr-ms and found it in the Undelete trashcan. When I undelete the recording back to recordings folder all of a sudden I have 2 recordings of Hotel and I'm pretty sure before I undelete the recording there was none. So I look in the recording folder and yes there were two recordings of Hotel.

The log says the files have been moved to the recordings folder but they were in the trashcan so does the log give you any idea why?

Looking at the log files I can't see anything wrong.

In the case where it found the file out of spec, it processed it and then moved it, replacing the messed up recording.

In the case where the file was fine, there was no file to move.

If something other than what the log states is occurring, the only thing I can think of is your undelete software might have a bug and be deleting the wrong file during the move.  You can see in the log that the file was moved successfully where it states "1 bestand(en) zijn verplaatst." so the OS "thinks" the file was moved correctly.

Yes, the problem is Undelete. When I disabled the undelete service it was moved like it should but brings me to another problem.

The recording with incorrect duration is fixed and moved to rhe recorded tv folder according the log but the recording is not fixed at all.

The time line indicates the right time but when I watch the fixed recording from the start and skip forward it skips to the 30th minute and from that point the same skip issue as in the non fixed recording.

the non fixed recording timeline says the duration of the recording is 49 minutes and the fixed recording is 114 minutes and that is correct so what in the durationfix process went wrong or do I have to change a setting or so?

Yes, the problem is Undelete. When I disabled the undelete service it was moved like it should but brings me to another problem.

The recording with incorrect duration is fixed and moved to rhe recorded tv folder according the log but the recording is not fixed at all.

The time line indicates the right time but when I watch the fixed recording from the start and skip forward it skips to the 30th minute and from that point the same skip issue as in the non fixed recording.

the non fixed recording timeline says the duration of the recording is 49 minutes and the fixed recording is 114 minutes and that is correct so what in the durationfix process went wrong or do I have to change a setting or so?

I've never seen or heard of this before, but it looks like the fixDVRMSDuration executable is not able to correct the duration of this particular recording properly.

Now that you have the delete software disabled/uninstalled, does fixDVRMSDuration fail to work properly with ALL recordings or is this a one time fluke?

I've been using this for a good year or more and many 100's of recordings have been fixed.  Not once have I noticed a "fix" not working properly.

I suggest leaving it alone and functional for a few days and see how well it works.  Hopefully this is a fluke and the majority of your recordings will be fixed.

The REAL problem here isn't with the fixDVRMSDuration executable that babgvant created, nor the script that I created.  The REAL problem is Microsoft has not released a patch for this problem since it first appeared the day Vista was made available to people trying to use Media Center to watch their TV shows.

How long will it take for Microsoft to fix this Vista bug?

I did a clean install without undelete software and all updates after SP1 but no luck. It happens to all recording with duration issue not just one.

When converting to mpg with autodvrconvert and convert back to dvr-ms with videoredo the recording is fixed and works like a charm but I have to do 2 things manually while dvrmstoolbox with fixdvrmsduration works automaticly.

Since it not happen often I record 2 shows in a row from the same channel (that's where the problem begins) I'll fix it manually. But it's kind of weird the first 3 frames of the fixed files with fixdvrmsduration are black when I load them in videoredo. And the digital radio blue screen I don't get to. This also happens without all windows updates after SP1 so that rules out it's an update causing it.

But yes MS messed this part of Vista up and fixed it with TV Pack but that did mess up many other stuff. Hopes are on Windows 7!

Which TV Tuner card to you use?

You might want to try installing a different driver version for the tuner.  Perhaps an older or newer driver will either work or will produce video that fixDVRMSDuration can actually repair.
