alski Sounds like windows 7 is transcoding instead of simply allowing the steam to be split. Are you sure you have the latest Divx Tech Preview? Furthermore if you have installed "codec packs" then that can cause mayhem and may break it. MKV's should look perfect on the xbox.

MKV's should look perfect on the XBOX when using the Divx Tech Preview ?
Mine look terrible with the Windows 7 native transcoding.

belzebuttWhere can I get vader504's transcoder, that was mentioned in this thread? I've been trying to get T360 working under Windows 7 and I still can't get past the "unable to queue" error, I'd like to try this other transcoder. Is that one ONLY for DVDs or does it also do MKV?
Look here
If you are looking just for DVDs then you can give my trancode plugin a go. It doesn't actually transcode so the quality is the same: http://thegreenbutton.com/forums/t/78931.aspx

There's the key in the problem you are having, windows 7 (to an Xbox 360) does NOT transcode. If it is transcoding it means you potentially have the following issues: 1 You have installed a codec pack that has broken the divx tech preview or 2. you are using an older version of the divx tech preview which did not work with x64.
With the divx preview and AC3filter installed all my MKV's run on the Xbox 360 with excellent picture with a very lowly PC.
Thanks for the tip! I installed Divx Tech preview and now MKVs look and sound great. I'm thinking about encoding all my DVDs to save space and get rid of transcoding on the fly. HandBrake does a nice job encoding.

I installed Shark007 Win7 codec pack, I have a 32bit OS.
I've not actually installed the Divx Tech Preview as yet. So it sounds like you just have the Divx Tech preview and the AC3 Filter installed, anything else?
What about the Haali Alpha media splitter for Win7 ? I guess you don't need that if you are using the Divx Tech Preview.
That's correct, I have nothing else installed.
All divx/xvid files and MKV's with h264 streams should play nicely with the Xbox (up to certain bandwiths 12-15mps). The Divx Tech Preview simply splits the video/audio stream at the PC end and sends them directly to the xbox to decode. The AC3filter is needed for DTS streams used in some MKV's. It will *unfortunately* only send 2 channel audio in these situations. The solution here is to remux these into AC3.
Hi CW.
I followed your guide for getting T360 to work with Windows 7, and despite hours of trying, got nowhere. I had the same problem as reported here:
http://thegreenbutton.com/forums/t/78916.aspx
ie:
27/10/2009 23:16:32 *ERR* Transcoding error:27/10/2009 23:16:32 *ERR* Cannot get Console handle of stdout
WARNING: OUTPUT FILE FORMAT IS _MPEG_. See -of help.Cannot find codec 'dts' in libavcodec...ADecoder init failed :(
I SEEM TO HAVE SOLVED IT by replacing the version of Mencoder you recommend, with the mencoder-mt here:
http://ps3mediaserver.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/ps3mediaserver/win32/mencoder_mt.exe
rename it to mencoder.exe, replace the version that you recommended, and bingo! At last it works. For a brief second, something like "FFDShow Compatibility Manager" (?) flashes up on the XBox screen, then disappears, and the movie starts to play. Works with both DTS-enabled MKVs, and plained old ripped DVDs.
Hope this helps others!
Jim

I belive CWs guide is for AC3. Based on your error about not being able to find the codec for dts, do you also experience this with T360 on non-DTS audio? To make life simple, I typically just pick AC3 5.1 when ripping DVDs. I have been using the mencoder updated exe from his guide on Win7 RC for quite some time.

Wow. It takes forever to encode to H.264 AC3 MKV. I'm re-thinking the encoding of all my DVDs ripped in original VOB format. I did one as AVI as XVid AC3 and it was much faster. Is the quality that much different?

Yes, same problem (not sure if the error message was the same in the log file) with anything - wouldn't transcode at all. I have about 150 movies in MKV format, and about ten ripped in native DVD format (I tried those too though!) so my interest, as with most folks I suspect, is in MKVs, most of which will have DTS audio.
I'm using the RTM version, having tried with clean installs of Ultimate and Pro.
Interestingly, with VMC and the same extender, it all worked instantly - and not having had any problem, I hadn't discovered the stuff about replacing Mencoder etc with different versions, or the registry change.... just a straight install of T360 on VMC, and the XBox could instantly view the movies, both DTS MKVs and ripped DVDs.

Hi Jim
Good news, I have updated the intro page on the T360 guide with the new mencoder details you mentioned.
Mr Marc also got it working on Seven see here and belzebutt here
I know I first mentioned the new T360 guide in the 7MC RC forum which seemed to cause allot of confusion as I actually wrote the guide for Vista and never fully tested it on Seven. Even though it was entitled with Vista Media Center.
I'm planning on using the new native transcoder now in My Movies 3.0 so I'm hoping I don't need to use T360 anymore, as it's no longer developed or supported. I will have to see how that works out? or I might be back to getting T360 working on Seven myself.
Thanks

Hi Stuart.
Yes, I'd followed Mr Marc's post, and had no success - but I missed the fact that he was using a different version of Mencoder! Seems bezelbutt used that same mencoder too!
I installed My Movies 3, and instantly didn't like it at all - the new view is not good to use, and navigation is difficult. One of the most important things for me, however, is the lack of being able to toggle watched/unwatched status (though you can do it in collection management) - after copying a movie I'll try it for a few mins to make sure it runs, and that sets the status to "watched" - with MM3, it's a real pain in the buttox to have to go into collection management to set the flag to "unwatched again". A lot of it I feel is change for change's sake, not improvement, so I've gone back to 2.57, which is great.
I tried the DivX MKV Splitter in the hope of avoiding using T360, but the problem there is, while MKVs play (with some shortcomings, it's not the finished product, after all) it doesn't play ordinary ripped DVDs on the extender, due to Microsoft's oppressive policy there, so they do need to be transcoded. Hence, back to T360.
Cheers,
Using the updated mencoder seems to be key then for you, did you also update the ffmpeg ?
The My Movies developer Brian, is very open to feature requests and suggestions, why not head over to here and let them know what you think about My Movies and the watched/unwatched status and any other issues.
I know there are plans for newer views and other features as well, I tested nearly all the pre-release versions of My Movies 3.0 and was quite involved with ironing out some of the early bugs.
As a custom installer I tend to favour My Movies as it's generally more stable than Media Browser.
However personally I still like Media Browser and still have it installed as well on my system at home.
I've not tried the DIVX tech preview yet but it's on my list of stuff to do next week. As MKV's transcoded by the native in-built Windows 7 transcoder look bad on the XBOX360.
The new in-built trancoder in My Movies 3.0 only currently does DVD VOB's in VIDEO_TS and DVD ISO's, there are future plans for file transcoding for MKV and such as well.
Was Vaders transcoder ever updated to work with 7MC? I know I had it working in Vista in the native DVD library for DVD rips and Mikinho has done a new DVD transcoder plug-in as well which I've not tried.
I'm also considering converting MKV's to WTV and then there is the old DVD to DVR-MS conversion if you don't want to transcode on the fly at all.
Plenty of options and things to think about! There is never one correct way to do things, it's just a case of what you are able to getting working and how well you feel it works for your setup.
