I'm disappointed. :( I’ve searched everywhere but I can’t find a proper "Media Center" with hardware acceleration.

Win 7 Media Center is fine with some plugins but it fails when rendering HD content with hardware acceleration and subtitles.

Others are too buggy and hw accel doesn’t work fine. Why can’t someone design a pretty UI around MPC-HC?

MPC-HC is by far the best player around but has no media gallery.

It could be just a Silverlight or Flash thing launching MPC-HC. Do someone know such software?

Not to sound rude, but prehaps you could list the formats you are trying to use with HA and what video hardware you're using?  I can't really help, since MC does everything I ever ask it to, but it would probably assist others in giving you the advice you're looking for Cool

    Win7 x64 / GA-MA78GPM-DS2H / Phenom 9350e / 9400GT 1GB Silent / 4GB OCZ 1066Mhz / WD15EADS 1.5TB / BDU-X10S Blu-Ray / Baltimore/Washington D.C. Markets / FiOS ClearQAM / ATSC / TMT 5 / Bravia KDL-40WL140 / Roku XD for streaming since MC sucks at it

Hardware acceleration on HD video like .mkv is nice but not neccessary if your running the right hardware. I am using CoreAVC with my Nvidia 8500gt to get my .MKV and Bluray H/W accelerated but I still run into some files that dont make use of HA.  The bottom line is both play perfect with or without Hardware Acceleration and I dont notice that my CPU is using 30% load vs 15% with H/A. I suppose if you running a low end Dual Core or outdated CPU this may be an issue.

@pete1122- Hardware Acceleration makes a big difference on ION\Atom based mini-HTPCs. I'm looking forward to CoreAVC 2.0 x64. I hope it does what we need.

@sealightPT- If you'd like I'll send you a registry file to allow you to run MPC-HD from the More command and have it launch full screen. This is what I do on my system. I have MPC-HD and VLC as an option under More so if Media Center is being finicky with a particular file I switch over to another player.

No worries, you didn't sound rude.

I would like to play H.264 MKV, DivX, XVid videos with HA and subtitles. For audio I want to play FLAC. The hardware is an ION nVidia ATOM 330.

With MPC-HC everything plays fine but we don't have a fancy Media Gallery. With Media Center we have the fancy GUI (specially if we install the "Media Browser" plugin) but no HA, most of the time no subtitles, ...

    (sorry for my english)

    Thank you for your feedback.

Hardware Acceleration is indeed crucial if you’re using a mini-PC ION/ATOM as is the case.

Even if that wasn’t the case why consume CPU cycles if the GPU is there do perform the job? With HA I can play H.264 1080p movies with an ATOM CPU below 10% usage. Without it it’s almost impossible.

Mikinho, you’re saying it is possible to use MPC-HC with Media Center? How? Can we use Media Browser and launch MPC-HC from it seamless ?

I can't comment on how seamless it is with Media Browser as I do not use it but I do know that Media Browser has the option to use an external player instead. See http://www.mediabrowser.tv/wiki/index.php/Configuring_External_Players.

If you'd like to do the same within Media Center's native Movie Library and\or Video Library it is also possible but it isn't too seamless you can use a plugin I wrote that will optionally launch it from "More" menu and will revert to Media Center when closed or back hit.

I'm sure this is true, l suppose I have never considered an Atom based HTPC to be ideal. As for wasting CPU cycles it's all transparent, how would I know if I'm using 30% instead of 20% of my Quad Core and why would I care?  That's the benefit of having a processor like that, you dont worry about it and that is priceless!

Maybe. But that system sounds a little “overkill” to have on a living room.
Moreover what is the power consumption of that “beast”? Go Green :)

I thought the same thing when I first built my system, I started with a 3.2ghz celeron and ran into trouble play Bluray, then I upgraded to a E4500 Dual Core and ran into problems playing 30gig bluray .MKV rips while cutting commericals and using an extender while recording HD channels.  So I upgraded to a Q6600, for me it seems like there was no such thing as overkill.  The downside being like you pointed out the power consumption but in the long run had I started out with the Q6600 it would had saved me untold weeks and weeks of troubleshooting codec, drivers, and hardware acceleration issues to get things to play smooth.

With that being said I'm not saying my way is the right way, I'm a bit "out there" when it comes to my HTPC.  I just installed a SSD hard drive as my main O/S drive to reduce noise and speed things up...not a wise cost per benefit move.

I think you need to reread his requirements. DivX 7 does not support subtitles yet. DivX 7 currently exposes only the primary audio track. Yes we understand what Windows Media Foundation but it is a new technology and has large gaps missing still.
