I am on Vista(5490) and just got an xbox 360....

When I attempt to setup the xbox as an extender it fails at the step where it is attempting to "Configure Extender Settings"

It comes back with "Configuration Error: An error was encountered while configuring your computer for use with this Extender"

My 360 is able to log onto live, media center recognizes the 360 on my network, and the network settings tests pass (actually the one that looks for a PC fails when it cannot find "Windows Media Connect" which is not used by Vista)

Is there a log file for media center that I can look at to at least get an idea of what is wrong?

    Is this a known issue?

Any ideas at all would be appreciated.

    Thanks

FWIW, I have done the following:

    1) Turned off my firewall

    2) Ran media center as Administrator

    3) Selected both 'do' and 'do not' share my media with the extender

    4) I've tried two different linksys routers ( I read xbox live isnt compatible with some routers... so I thought maybe I was encountering a related issue)

Do i need to setup something on my router (forwarding / triggering / etc...?)

I had this exact same issue.  Unfortuantely, I suspect my setup is probably quite different from what you've got, and that what worked for me may be of little use to you ...

I've got a /29 from my DSL provider, but because it's only 5 usable addresses (1 for the router) I use private address space as well.  My Vista box was in the /29 space, and my 360 was in the private space, and it was stopping at the same spot as your's and giving me the same error.  I moved the 360 into the /29 and the extender connected right away.

While I highly doubt you have the same setup as me, the important part of all this is that when they were in seperate subnets the traffic was being processed by the iptables firewall on my WRT54GL, so I guess there must be something at least slightly out-of-the-ordinary that occurs when it gets to the "Configuring Extender Settings" step.  If you've got both of them connected to a router though and in the same subnet, it shouldn't be filtering traffic, so I'm at a bit of a loss as to what could be the problem with that setup.

One thing you could do to test this would be to connect your 360 to your Vista box directly with a crossover cable to see if it can establish the connection.  If it can, at least you know where the problem must be.

    Hope this helps ...

i don't remember the build number, but if i'm not mistaken a build around the 5400 did have a problem where the extenders wouldn't connect anymore.  besides, with the CPP reopened, i would download RC1, build 5600, as it's much improved over any other builds

You won't have much luck getting it to work on 5490 (don't recall that build myself..)

If you wish to try anything, go to your storage devices, hard disk, game saves, scroll to the bottom under system or something like that and delete the MCE extender software and see if re-downloading the image will work. (does this when you try and connect..)

Make sure your network is "private" or "home" as well or else network discovery is usually shut off.   I'm not even sure if your build was certified with 360

I have the same issue.  I lost my OS partition and decided to go from MCE2005 to Vista.
Everything between my 360 and MCE2005 worked fine and I really enjoyed
it.   I installed Vista which was painless and without doing anything
else (literally the first thing I tried) was to set up MC and my 360 as
an extender.  I disconnected the xbox from the previous comuter in the
settings menu on the xbox and went to the media center setup and got my
8 digit number.  Vista automatically detected my xbox and up pops a
button to setup my extender.  I clicked it and went through the steps
but when I get to the screen where the settings are applied (the one
with the checkmarks) on configuring extender settings the computer puts up a
bluescreen and reboots.  When I get back in I get the vista error
dialog box and i look for a solution but I haven't found one.  I'm about to go back to MCE 2K5.  I've formatted my xbox HD and it still dosen't work.

FWIW, I'm running vista ultimate RTM and it connects to my xbox360 without any problem.  Configuring the extender was a snap.

I also have the same issue. Upgraded to Vista, now can't get PC and Xbox to talk. It's driven me crazy for days now. I've tried everything, opening ports, disabling firewalls etc. I've isolated the issue to the router/modem (Netcomm NB9W) though, as I get all the checkmarks when I connect the PC directly with the Xbox (ethernet). Seems to work find then.

I notice there an Xbox Live router certification program,, but I'm not aware of anything that certifies that a router will allow a vista PC and and Xbox to talk flawlessly. Pity. I'm getting desperate.

there was a thread regarding xbox360 & vista.  The person had live OneCare installed.  He had to remove it to configure the extender.  Check the FAQ under "vista media center general"

Remove MS ONEcare if you have it installed. It broke my extender and actually just blocked rdp (port 3389).

Another quick test that is very EASY is to try and telnet to the media center box on port 3389 if you have another computer.

So if you have another computer.. connect it to the network and go to a command prompt.
Also, make sure you know what IP address your media center OS is using.

now, in the command prompt. type this:
    telnet <IPaddress> 3389

(replace <IPaddress> with your MCE IP address)

You can tell then if your PC is even allowing rdp sessions.

I've been right through that thread. No help there. I don't have OneCare installed.

I've tried it, but only get a "The system cannot find the file specified" message??

Just to clarify, this refers to the Telnet suggestion.

What OS is running on the other machine? I don't know of any recent windows OS that doesn't have telnet. Hell, you could even try it on the localhost machine. Just type the same command I gave you in the command prompt on the local box. That way you will understand what I am trying to have you do. Of course doing it this way will most likely work because the box itself would most likely not be blocked from it's own IP.

    Thanks for the input.

XP is running on the other machine.

On both the local (Vista) box and the XP box I can get telnet to run by typing "telnet" at the command prompt. A Microsoft Telnet > prompt comes up i.e. both PC have telnet.

However, if I type "telnet <192.168.1.3> 3389" I still get get the error message. I've tried variations: i.e. I've also tried at the command prompt:

    c:\Users\Administrator>telnet <192.168.1.3> 3389
    c:\telnet <192.168.1.3> 3389
    Microsoft Telnet > telnet <192.168.1.3> 3389
    Microsoft Telnet >  <192.168.1.3> 3389

All I get are error messages.
