Can someone please tell me how to get WMP11 or Vista WMC to recognize mkv files. I have done the registry hack and the codecs (ffdshow and Matroska) and I when I add folders with mkv files they never get picked up in the search. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Try to install the latest version of the Haali Splitter in Vista, and be sure you the codecs needed for your mkv files. Here is the latest version available: http://haali.cs.msu.ru/mkv/MatroskaSplitter.exe
Tried the latest Matroska 1/31/07 Splitter and still doesn't work. Can everyone else confirm that it's working. Vista MCE won't even show directories that do not contain recognized files. Any other suggestions?
Are you sure the MKV files are unable to play, or they just dont show up in your directories? When you are trying to open the MKV file in Windows Media Player, make sure you choose Any File in file types. The Haali splitter doesn't add the reg entries needed to force Vista to show MKV files as media files, but it will enable the file to play as long as you have the correct codecs installed for that file.

The above download adds registry entries that will allow you MCE to recognise mkv, mov and mp4 files as valid video files. If you intend on playing x264 files wrapped in mkv then i recommend ffdshow or coreavc.
I attest that the reg entries contains nothing harmfull. You can click edit and you will be able to see all thats being added to the registry and see that its as I say it is :)
