    Can someone please tell me how to get WMP11 or Vista WMC to recognize mkv files or any other file types?  I have done the mkv type registry hack and the latest codecs (ffdshow and Matroska) and I when I add folders with mkv files they never get picked up in the search.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    I don't know the proper way to get the recognised but I know that if you rename the file extension to .avi or .mpg then it'll pick them up and play them

    You could do that until you find the "proper" way.

    Thanks.  I'll try that as a last resort.

    This should work ( thanks to idbirch2  for the showing me how to do this with .ts files)

    "Ah sorry, I didn't realise your recording device was like that.  You could try the 'perceived type' regfix by pasting the following into notepad and saving as "anything.reg"

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mkv]
    "PerceivedType"="video"

    Double click the reg file and agree to the warning, if you are running Vista on a PC, this should get them to show up."

    Then get this Download version 3.1.1.0 (2k/xp/2k3 only) and install

    Open the mkv with windows media player first just in case and get it try and open file even if it says it doesnt recognise extension.

    All my mkv's show up in vista mce, but not all of them played

    For the ones that didnt work i used this

    http://www.bunkus.org/videotools/mkvtoolnix/downloads.html#windows

    and got rid of the other language and subtitles and they worked fine

    Thanks to everyone for their help.  I finally figured out a solution.  On my machine in Vista MCE, it won't add a folder that doesn't have some type of native recognized file type (avi, mpg).  I had all of my HD files (mkv) in a  directory called HD.  After installing ffdshow and matroska I could play all my mkv HD files fine in WMP11.  But when I went to add them in Vista MCE it would just search and find nothing and not add the folder.  I just happened to try and add a avi file under my HD folder and did another search and it found the avi file but not the mkv files.  I went back and checked the videos section of Vista MCE and now it lets me access whatever mkv's and avi's I want to under the HD directory.  Thanks again for all your help.

    Hi!

    Dunno if you have sorted this problem yet, but I'll give it a go any ways. I've been trying a cuople of different codecs in Vista Media Center, most recently I used "ffdshow". My current set up contains the following codecs:

    - Nvidia Pure Video Codec
    - Core AVC (also contains Halii Media Splitter)
    - Xvid
    - Divx
    - AC3 Filter

    The Core AVC codec is one of the best for decoding h.264 files such as .mkv. With this config you won't need to edit or add any registry files or anything like that. Just install and watch. :)

    Hope that this might help some one.

    well not only do you need to tell windows what the perceived/content types are you must also set the permissions for that type of file. Take for example .mp4 but it should work for other file types.

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mp4]
    "PerceivedType"="video"
    "Content Type"="video/mp4"

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Multimedia\WMPlayer\Extensions\.mp4]
    "Runtime"=dword:00000007
    "Permissions"=dword:0000000f
    "UserApprovedOwning"="yes"

    Just add a shortcut to the folder within "Videos" in your profile.

    Read one of my old posts to "catch-up":
