Hi Folks. I have a problem with my audio setup here, and I was hoping somebody might be able to steer me in the right direction.

Basically the issue is that while watching analog cable TV, the sound only comes out the 2 front speakers (and the sub), but not out of the center channel and rear speakers. I have a 5.1 speaker setup. My amp is connected through spdif directly to my mobo. I have no problems with playing DTS or Dolby Digital DVD's or videos, but any time I play TV be it recorded or live I only get 2 speakers :(

I know it's possible to get surround sound out of an analog TV signal. Even if it's not the greatest it sure beats 2 speakers. I can sometimes "trick" it in to submission my going through the speaker setup and selecting 7 speaker or 5 speaker in or enabling / disabling Dolby PL II in the Realtek config, but this only lasts until the next reboot or until I play a DVD.

I used to be on MCE 2005, but I've recently upgraded to Vistra Ultimate. The symptoms are the same on both OS's. I'm on the latest drivers for my Realtek (1.82), and up to date with all the latest updates in Vista.

Does anyone know how to make my ears happy? Is this a hardware thing? A driver thing?

    My hardware is as follows:

    1x PVR 150 MCE edition
1x PVR 150 (non MCE edition - ie it came with the Hauppauge remote)
    1x PVR 500 (dual tuner)
    Denon AVR-486S amp
    Asus P5LD2-Deluxe Mobo w Realtek ALC880/882 audio

    Thanks!

Your receiver will need to support pro logic or pro logic 2 to do what you want. If your receiver has these settings then the receiver will simulate surround sound from two channel audio. It looks to me like you are are using an amp without a receiver. If this is the case then the amp has no built in decoder like a receiver and all you will get is two channel sound. I think you can use a software decoder like AC3Filter to get pro logic sound out of two channels (but I haven't tried that).

Are you recording digital cable channels with a digital tuner card?  If not you are only going to get stereo on the non-digital channels.
