    This was Amazon's response:

"The basic purchase agreement allows you to download and view each
video from up to 2 different compatible devices (laptop, desktop, TiVo
DVR, etc.) and transfer the video to 1 hand-held video device from
each computer that contains the video. You may make back-up copies of
the files you download, but each file will only be viewable on the
computer originally used to download it. Therefore, it would not be
compatible with the device in question."

I've got a MAJOR stuttering issue playing Xvid files (with 5.1 sound) that are over 1GB in size (on this extender and the 360). They are dvds that were encoded at 1.5Mbps using Handbrake, and are stored on an HP WHS.

These play fine on the Vista Box, but I don't really want to compare a PC to this extender. Any reason why this is happening?

    Thanks

Thanks for trying it out surge, if the video and audio played without any issues then that sounds like it will work, the audio is just AAC-LC which is 2 channel.

Your test file plays perfectly on my 2100 as well, and it actually starts a lot faster than my xvids with AC3.  Are you saying using the AAC-HE profile for audio won't play on the 2100?  If I understand correctly, there is no way to have surround sound in a mp4 file to play on the 2100/2200.  Can you confirm?  If so, is there any advantage is going with x264 vs xvid?  I currently have all my videos in xvid with AC3 audio, and all plays fine (aside from the 5-10 second start time).  I assume I can't go this route with high definition content though.

Just signed up as new member.   Have found lots of great advice.  Has anyone found a solution to DMA2100 LED better than taping over same?  Thanks.
  •
Never mind.  Appears I figured it out.

What did you figure out?  Is there anything besides the tape?  I got my DMA2100 connected in my bedroom 2 days ago.  First night it was so bright that I got up at 3AM and unplugged it.  Put the tape on it last night and at least that worked.

I haven't tried it, but you could probably open up the case and put tape on the inside of the window where the light shines through.. This would keep the outside appearance nice and clean.

I stuck a small piece of post-it on the outside.. I could probably stick it inside as well.. It dims the light but still lets me see it so I can see the status..

    Blinking:  it's starting up

i saw conflicting reports that an HDMI connection would allow the extender to "power down" to a dimer red light, but don't have a spare HDMI cable to try it right now.  I don't care so much about the small patch of tape on the outside, just wondering if there was another way.

Hi I just finished reading all 13 pages of this topic and have a few questions:

    1) If you install an addon (such as one that allows XML descriptions/images) into Vista Media Center, will the extender pass this data through?

    2) I've read that DIVX movies with 5.1 AC3 will not actually play as 5.1 but instead will come out as PCM stereo.  Anyone experience this?

3)If you are watching Live TV on two of these at a time, I assume you would have to watch the same channel?  Is there any way to have two TV tuner cards installed on the Vista machine and have Media Center recognize them individually?

    Thanks in advance,

    Jeremiah

Most addons work fine..ie: weather..tapirex callerid, video browser, music browser, just to name a few..

it will try to output 5.1, but the audio will cut in and out so it's not usable. If you connect the regular rca left and right audio cables, you can switch your receiver to that input to get regular stereo.

Each extender can view a seperate live channel.

Without TV Pack, you can have as many tuners as your machine can handle (search for something like "3 tuner hack")

With TV pack and Vista Ultimate, you are limited to 4 tuners of the same type....4 QAM, 4 Analog, etc.  I think Home Premium limits you to 2 of the same type.

    Surge,

Thanks for the quick responses.  That 5.1 sounds like a deal breaker.  Is there any workaround for this and the DMA2100 to achieve surround?  Or should I be shopping different hardware?

I get full 5.1 surround on VOBs that have been renamed to .mpg so the extender can handle it as well as with HD channels, so the extender CAN handle it.

Hopefully the DVIX and 5.1 issue can be fixed with a firmware update.

I don't think any of the other extenders work with DIVX and 5.1 either.

Hey after I asked that question I started reading some other posts on here.  I noticed that some people posted succesful results of XVID with 5.1.  Any experience there?

My receiver detects 5.1, but it works for about few seconds, cuts out for a few comes back on and over and over.

here's the link the an old thread.. might be worth bumping since it only got 2 replies..

Just ordered off of Dell.com for $86 after tax shipping.

I already have my PS3 for playing stored video files, I just wanted a way to view my VMC records onto the TV.

How's the streaming quality of HD content over ethernet on the box, but wifi from the PC?
