I've played with the Aimersoft video converted quite a bit, and it works well with a good feature selection. However, since this is TGB, its DVR-MS support is pretty low. I've gotten one file to work, but all HD and most SD files crash or hang the app.
If Aimersoft could get the DVR-MS support for this fixed, I'd but it in a hear beat. Until then, I'm waiting for something that supports DVR-MS better.
This is getting frustrating. Thank you for all your suggestions but none work for me. Aimersoft is saying it doesn't support the dvr-ms format or at least it is not in the supported file formats list. And I need a software that converts to mp4 for the iphone and not .wmv. Ill try any other suggestions.
Most of the software apps support Analog DVR-MS files, but none work with Digital DVR-MS files consistently that I have been able to find. I've tries all I could find, and could get a couple converted, but usually it stops or crashes.
The only sure fire way to convert all DVR-MS files, is to first convert them to MPEG and unwrap the ASF portion from them. I used DVRToolbox and the DVRMS2MPG option to extract the MPG contents and then Movie Maker, Aimersoft, etc all convert it fine. Because its not transcoding, its a very fast process (takes about 2 mins on my VMC box) but you need the space for it.
I have found a program Called Digital Media Converter that seems to handle DVRMS files correctly (including Digital), but its failing to run on my Vista X64 system saying "Windows XP SP2 is required to open this file type". I installed on my MCE2005 machine and it had converted all the files I have tried and has an iPod MPG4 mode, so it should work with your iPhone as well. Website is www.deskshare.com.
Have you trialed TMPGenc 4.0 Xpress? Refer to the discussion here: http://thegreenbutton.com/forums/thread/245492.aspx I have yet to find a consumer product better than this.
You say you want fast conversions, however this is not possible if you want wmv or mp4 output. The only way to acheive fast is to leave it in the original encoding e.g. mpeg2. Also "best" (quality) and "fast" are always a trade-off.

For Recorded TV:
There was software that cost $30, called MyTV ToGo, I used it with my Ipod touch and it would work great. It runs a little agent that would watch the folders and convert, and put into Itunes. The problem is they took it down and are reworking it to support Win 7. Vista (without TV Pack) worked great. Maybe you can't contact them http://www.mytvtogo.com . If they give you an ETA on the Win 7 version, let me know. The app is great, but it takes them forever to release any new versions. Their website has said they are working Win 7 version since last October.
Additionally there is freeware that works with Win 7 and Vista, it is called ipodifier. To get the Win 7 version, you have to join their forums and download it from one of the posts as the homepage still has the old version. I had TV shows with funny characters in the title, so it would go crazy back when I tested it. (For example, it didn't know what to do with the / in Nip/Tuck and freak out). Anyway, that is how I ended up with MyTV ToGo. I have not tested the the latest Ipodifier version as I won a Zune and use that because it is so simple to sync. But you could try it as it is free - http://www.ipodifier.com . This one will also put it in your Itun
For DVDs:
I like Xilisoft DVD Ripper Ulitimate - http://www.xilisoft.com. It allows you to batch convert and control how many cores you use. Batch converting is great (if you have multiple DVD drivers or HD Rips as you queue and go to sleep).
