When I launch XmRadio in the Vista Media Center, everything looks as it should. I log in, I get the channel line up, I select my channel and the screen says it is playing. However there is no sound.
There is also no activity on my modem, and my syslog that monitors my routers, show no activity.
Everything else within media center and the rest of the computer works. There are no errors in the event logs.
I do not know what else to check. Windows media player works with online content and so does XM if I ust the browser, navigate to thier site and listen online.
Has anyone else had this problem? Can anyone give any advise what to check?
I have spent all weekend trying to track this down. I obtained better syslog software and my rig is communicating with XM radio.
As I said, I log in, see the channel line up, pick a channel, it says it is playing but no sound.
Everything else on the computer works in regards to TV, CD's DVD's.. etc. It seems that the XMradio selection within Media Center uses Windows Media Player. All aspects of Windows Media Player seem to work.
Somehow, there must be an association with the XM radio and Windows Media player that is missing or screwed up.
While I am typing this... I just remembered.. I installed SP1 a couple of weeks ago. I'll bet SP1 messed up something.
Is there any advice or suggestions out there? An XML file that might be missing??
Any help and suggestions are welcome. It really is not that important however it is my rig & I want it to run perfectly
I have just finished my Vista SP1 install and now the VMC XM Radio stopped just as everyone else in the string. I discovered this group after a quick Google of the problem but it looks like there has been no activity on this problem for awhile.
Has anyone solved this?
The only way I was able to get it working was to do a clean install of the OS. Before installing any app software or any updates, I would create a restore point so when it broke, I could restore and trouble shoot. However after every test of XM after an app install or update, it always worked.
I have been able to duplicate the problem. Still don't know how to fix it, but I believe I know the cause.
It seems that if you launch a file that requires WMP to run, if it is the first time WMP is launched, it goes through a couple of pages of setup. This is when the XM app gets broken.
If you launch WMP for the first time by clicking its icon as opposed to clicking a file that is associated with WMP, and go through the setup pages of WMP everything is fine.
I have SP1 installed and my XM app is still working. Somehow, if WMP gets launched for the first time by clicking on an associated file, that breaks the XM app. If you manually launch WMP for the first time and go through the first time setup it does not break the XM app. It must be a WMP setting somewhere but after hours of changing WMP settings, I never got it to work once broken.
Like I said, I haven't been able to fix it once it is broken, but I believe the above is the cause as I have been able to duplicate it several times.
By the way... In my search for a solution, this problem is wide spread. There are several members of several forums reporting the same problem. I did have a ticket open with MS but none of their suggestions worked so I eventually formatted my boot drive and did a fresh install of the OS. Since then, the ticket was closed as unresolved.
Just an update... XM broke again. Yesterday (06-25-08), there were two updates for Vista both dealing with VMC. One update was supposed to fix something in regards to an Xbox as an extender and HD video from the Media Center. The other was dealing with security and Media Center. I am not in front of my rig now and I didn't note the KB's
After installing the update(s) and testing XM, it is now broken.
Login, get the channel line up, select a channel, it says it is playing but no audio.
I also have a gadget called "Ultimate Weather". That gadget will no longer obtain data from the net.
I'll roll back the updates tonight and see if it fixes things. If not, I'll do a system restore. If that doesn't work, I'll restore a drive image.
This is a hassle.
Holy cow! It worked for me too. I have re-formatted teh HD three times and tried all sorts of reinstallation scenerios. Now I am back to listening to XM in VMC.
Now for the next challenges...trying to watch ripped DVD's on my extender.

The one issue I have noticed though is that while surfing the web, various sites ned to newest Adobe Flash player to be installed. Just another issue.
I just wanted to say thanks to you all for working this problem to a conclusion. I have been experiencing the same problem for a couple weeks and have been following your thread. Now in hindsight I remember letting the automatic Flash upgrade run,
Everything is working fine now.
Thanks again
Now the problem lies with the fact that I have web pages that will not load or run properly unless teh new Adobe Flash Player is installed. I tried installing v9 with v7.73 in tact and the XMRadio ceased functioning again within VMC. I uninstalled teh v9 and reinstalled v7.73 and the XM started playing again.
It looks as though we can have one or the other but not both. The interesting part is taht it only occurs on one of my computers and not the other. Of course the one that is bothered is at home where I am trying to use my Extender to listen to XM over the home stereo.
