Can anyone confirm that?

Would anyone know if this release will allow HDTV playback using DisplayPort on the new Dell monitors using this technology? 

Currently, on my 30" Dell 3008WFP, I can only display Blu-Ray movies using the DisplayPort input at 2560x1600 resolution.  When I try and display HDTV, I get a "Restricted Content"  "Display Driver error".  This error occurs at ANY resolution I use ... 1920x1080, 640x480, etc.  We have confirmed this problem exists using 3 different DisplayPort Video cards (2 ATI's and 1 NVidia) on VMC HDTV playback.  We are pretty sure this is a Microsoft driver issue within VMC...

I think it actually means it now supports widescreen thumbnails for recorded TV.

If, and I mean **IF** this really is an OEM only update then words truly fail me.  However, I'm gonna try to refrain from blasting MS until we know for sure.

Come on MS, please confirm this to be NOT true!!  Or tell us something at least.

Way to go MS, a real advancement in technology. Having us wait for years and letting it only go to OEM's. That's a good way to win the support of your core base of customers.

I own a business installing eHome, you can GUARANTEE that I will not be installing Vista Media Center for any of them, there are tons of other options that allow customers to not have outdated hardware as soon as you decide to release something new.

How long will it take for people to realize that the people here at TGB, who are active, are a very small minute group, when compared to the typical usage by most vista owners.

MS is not going to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on features that maybe 1000 users out of millions would use.

Imagine if you owned MS, would you piss money down the drain on features that .01% of your user base would actually use?

And if you don't wanna install VMC, fine, go install Sage or something else but stop with the threats.  MS could care less if you go over to SageTV.  It's not their core market segment.  We really have nothing to gain from hearing you complain about how you are going to run away from vista if you don't get what you want.  Fine, run away, but don't be a drama queen about it.

Unless I read it wrong, I think what he is saying is that users of "VMC" in general are a "niche group" compared to most users of the Vista OS and don't justify Microsoft catering to those users wants and desires because they make up such a small sub-segment of their sales.  That doesn't mean MS won't give the features people want by any means, it just means it's less of a priority to them.

All I can say is that with Microsoft's bungling of everything MCE related and complete lack of advertising; TGB members are THE ONLY people who actually discovered that M$ put a “cool” feature in Vista.  They are also THE ONLY people that matter and if M$ doesn’t listen, MCE users will never make up more than 0.01%.  The problem is that M$ absolutely refuses to listen to the 0.01% of the enthusiastic users and instead either ignores us or else decides to cater to the 0.000001% of high end system builders.

 

It is completely comical and desperately sad to continually see these people fumble around with the only cool software they've ever produced and watch it die a slow and painful death.

If they would just make it easier for 3rd party developers to integrate features into VMC I think there would be far less venom directed toward Microsoft. If they don't want to spend money on such a 'niche product', then open it up.

No Blu-Ray support, No Mpeg 4 support, No DVD streaming, etc etc. isn't what I'd call niche, but if that's the case for them, and they don't want to spend the development dollars on these things, make it easier for 3rd parties to add it seamlessly without hacks.

I want to be able to use whatever Mpeg2 decoder I want, and I can't even do that without hassle.

 

 

So what does this mean? I'm confused, why would it only go to OEM? People on here are going to be pissed off if that is the case.

 

I post very little but am on this site reading daily and have used Media Center a long time.  I love it.  I don't want to be a drama queen but am a little taken aback by people who are negative towards those unhappy with lack of HD support in VMC.  Briefly and simply, I am happy with almost all of my experiences using extenders around my house and have workarounds for all of the limitations (to me) except for HDTV (non cable customer).  I know it was a semi secret announcement about Direct TV support but most seemed positive and I was willing to wait for it.  OTA HD works great for now.  But like others, if it is not a feature coming reasonably soon (2008), then I'm not going to wait for it either.  Whether I move to a Sage, I'm not sure.  I don't want to think about it for now : )

I understand Microsoft (I'm a long time MCSE and MS fan) but I'll still let them know through this now MS forum when I'm unhappy.  True some people are more passionate about it and post with more "feeling".  Hey, where else to vent?  I'm still optimistic and will see what happens...and I'm too tired to redo my existing set up.

I'm sure DirecTV will come sooner or later. I'm just afraid it will be later. I've had an hdtv for 3 years now. I'm currently getting ota. I've been waiting for DirecTV support for over 2 years now. If it's not out when fiji hits, then I'm getting a DirecTV HD DVR.
