gtriamy:IT WORKS! or at least it found the clearQAM tuner during the scan. Now i just have to wait for the guide to download data and then i'll start manually scanning through the found channels. I did have to do a bit to get it to work. Here's what i did: 1. Uninstall the card. FULL uninstall which means i uninstalled through the hardware manager then I deleted the corresponding regestry key folder HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\hcw18bda and restarted. 2. Installed the drivers via the 4.2 installer. 3. Installed the new registry key patch. 4. Restart 5. Setup via VMC It's scanning for channels right now so i'll update if it finds anything (it should).
Nice! Do you have the Feature Pack installed prior to the reload? Also any news on the results of your channel scan?
PeterFnet:Where did you get these drivers? Were these from the HP site? or from a time when they randomly appeared on Hauppauge's site?I noticed that the HP driver set has the following in hp-color.reg. which is the same as the portion of the registry mentioned earlier:[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\HCW85BDA\Parameters]"AllowQAM_Powertoy"=dword:00000001
If you mean the 4.2 drivers, you can find them on the Hauppuage site here: http://www.hauppauge.com/site/support/support_hvr1600.html
mjp14: finally here!!! from hauppauge... post your results. im not trying until later tonight. You can enable QAM by running the attached registry file. Save the file and rename the extension from .txt to .reg. Run the file by double clicking on it. Answer “Yes” to adding the information to the registry and then reboot the computer. A few caveats should be made clear to you before you enable QAM in Media Center. Clear QAM tuning is not on by default in Media Center because Microsoft is still having issues with their tuning schemes. Media Center appears to scan the correct QAM channels but seems to tune the wrong programs. They also have issues with major minor tuning. These are entirely Microsoft issues within Media Center and we do not have any workarounds for these problems, any fixes for these issues would have to come from Microsoft. Also, if you run this registry patch you will break digital tuning (both QAM and ATSC) in the WinTV application and ATSC tuning in Media Center. ... save to .reg file and run REGEDIT4;; NOTE: this file should ONLY be used to enable Clear QAM support on Fiji; (ie, "Windows Vista Media Center Feature Pack 2008");; Using this file WILL break applications that only support the legacy "ATSC Network Provider"; Apps must be recompiled to use the newer "MS Network Provider" if this file is used;; These keys control exposing support of Fiji compatible QAM for various ATSC products; (of course, the HW products must be physically capable of supportting QAM!!!);; You MUST restart you system after this file is installed for the changes to take effect;; HVR-1250, HVR-1290, HVR-1500q, HVR-1800, HVR-1850 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\HCW85BDA\Parameters]"AllowQAM_PowerToy"=dword:00000001 ; HVR-1600 (only some models support QAM; should list them here)[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\HCW18BDA\Parameters]"AllowQAM_PowerToy"=dword:00000001 ; HVR-USB2, HVR-1950[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\HCW73BDA\Parameters]"AllowQAM_PowerToy"=dword:00000001 ; HVR-950q[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\HCW72DTV\Parameters]"AllowQAM_PowerToy"=dword:00000001 ; HVR-2250 (not yet supporrted)

no link, that is the reg file. just copy and past into notepad and change the extension to .reg
Finally made it home from work! Good news so far--the "signal detection" found the QAM source. It's now scanning.
PS--I didn't have the 4.2 CD installed prior. This was a clean OS install, SP1+FP. Only thing "Hauppauge" related was the actual 1_62_26028(whql_signed) driver. No WinTV or anything else.
Applied the REG setting from above, with to the TV Setup wizard & let it detect my signal sources. It found the 1 S-Video STB for the satellite & 2 QAMs (2xhvr-1600). Next screens took me to the guide setup. Entered ZIP & Specified correct guide for satellite. Next screen asked for guide source for the QAM. I had three options. 2 were from local cable company "Digital" sources (I chose one of them) & I also had an option for "Other ATSC" guide data.
After chosing the correct digital cable guide, it is now going through its scan (this is taking a long time!).
Will post results when I get them; but, we're getting somewhere!
Matt O. ...tivo what? ...dish dvr--uh... huh? ...cable dvr fees--you're kidding, right?
My System Specs
scanning now with an 1800
Update: 11 channels found on comcast. What I have found is to select the ATSC guide for my area instead of comcast digital. It populates the guide with all the correct channel info.
I also just used the driver Vista installs. I did have to uninstall from device manager and reboot and let vista do its thing added the reg fix and bang got QAM on HVR-1800
Again thanks to the OP for the fix from Hauppauge

Sweet! Did you have the Vista MC Feature Pack installed?

I have found this to be true as well.
After having selected the Digital guide, it completed the scan but did not find any channels in the guide. I closed VMC & restarted it. Then I went into the Edit Guide Listings and it found all the xx.x digital channels; but, weren't mapped to anything or checked.
After checking the ones I wanted, I was able to map them to the appropriate guide name.
I then went in and redid the scans using the ATSC guide & it worked MUCH better than selecting the predefined guide.
All in all-- I now have QAM w/o any "beta plugin'. I'm using the WHQ driver w/o any "extra" hauppauge software installed. Just added the PowerToy reg key & all is gravey.
....now my real decision... to stay with SageTV or not....! grr... right as the new season starts, I have to make a major decision! ahhh!

All I need now is to fix the loss of hdmi video that happens after my AVR and tv are off for a while and I can dump the comcast dvr
