    Hey all,

I have a somewhat odd question.

When ripping movies, there are typically 6 or 7 >VOB files that (when combined) make-up the 'main movie'. The .VOB-set traditionally has the same filesize for all but the last .VOB - which will vary is size depending on the length of the film. All of the .VOB's in the set will have a common VTS number followed by a 'order number' that denotes the playlist. Example:

    F:\DVD\MOVIE_TITLE\VIDEO_TS\VTS_01_1.VOB (1,048,574KB)
    F:\DVD\MOVIE_TITLE\VIDEO_TS\VTS_01_2.VOB (1,048,574KB)
    F:\DVD\MOVIE_TITLE\VIDEO_TS\VTS_01_3.VOB (1,048,574KB)
    F:\DVD\MOVIE_TITLE\VIDEO_TS\VTS_01_4.VOB (1,048,574KB)
    F:\DVD\MOVIE_TITLE\VIDEO_TS\VTS_01_5.VOB (359,845KB)

In a recent 'rip' - I have a .VOB-set that shows the first .VOB with a zero (0) as the leading file. Example:

    F:\DVD\MOVIE_TITLE\VIDEO_TS\VTS_01_0.VOB (3,574KB)
    F:\DVD\MOVIE_TITLE\VIDEO_TS\VTS_01_1.VOB (1,048,574KB)
    F:\DVD\MOVIE_TITLE\VIDEO_TS\VTS_01_2.VOB (1,048,574KB)
    F:\DVD\MOVIE_TITLE\VIDEO_TS\VTS_01_3.VOB (1,048,574KB)
    F:\DVD\MOVIE_TITLE\VIDEO_TS\VTS_01_4.VOB (1,048,574KB)
    F:\DVD\MOVIE_TITLE\VIDEO_TS\VTS_01_5.VOB (359,845KB)

I am not trying to copy these files to another DVD - but hardlinking them to .MPEG, so that I can watch them on other network computers & extenders without needing the disk. Movies that have 'ripped' that reflect the traditional .VOB-set work fine...but the movie with the zero (0) descripter will not play.

    Any suggestions?

I am not 100% positive, but I believe that the 0 file is the DVD menu, which will not play on the extenders.

Have you tried getting rid of the 0 file and just play the 1, 2, 3, etc files?

I have edited the .WVX file (playlist) to both include and exclude the the \VTS_01_0.VOB file, and both result in the Xbox extender (and Vista Media Center) going directly to 'FINISHED' message.

I currently have a few other movies that are available for viewing, and they work great. The only (visible) difference is the leading file in the .VOB-set. I seem to recall an issues with another 'ripping' program that I used in the past - in which I would know right away (if I was watching the progress log) that if the first .VOB file it was grabbing had an odd size - the 'rip' would fail. Not sure what to to to get around this.

Wait.... the media center goes strait to finished?  It should be reading it as a normal DVD, maybe your rip is bad....  And you shouldnt have 0 included, I have the same type of files and just excluded the 0 file

I went thru and re-ripped the movie, and re-created the hardlinks, as well as the .WVX file.

This time around, I did not create a hardlink for the VTS_01_0.VOb - and that seems to have corrected the problem.

Prior to reading your post - I had edited the .WVX to exclude VTS_01_0 file - but there was still a link..so I think that may have been screwing up the works.

    Thanks for you feedback.
