You can safely install this month's Windows Updates - nothing related to Media Center that will re-break this.

Vista SP2 caused this problem on my system too.  Thanks to CX23882-19 for posting the manual fix.  Now Media Center is useful again!  I also noticed that .MPG video playback had the same issue.  When is MS gonna fix this!?

    Hi,

I recently updated to sp2 for vista home premium and experienced this kind of problems, just as described in this 3d. Now it seems like I have found the solution and I thank you for your big help. I will try later but I want to ask you a question before I do that, because maybe, in the meanwhile, something new has occured. If I fix the problem manually, without unistalling sp2, how can I cope with the future updates? Should I still avoid any other MC update? Or otherwise did MS released a new fix tool to solve the problem? Should I replace ehplayer.dll
whenever there is a Media Center update? Then, I just found this 3d:

"For those interested "KB974306 October 2009 Cumulative Update for Media Center for Windows Vista" which is available via windows update includes the changes made by KB967632 including the stop issue for mkv, avi, xvid etc.So if you don't want to have this problem do not install KB974306".

Does it mean that I have to avoid any mc update or, after your manual fix, I can still update it?

Thanks a lot for your help!!!! I was going crazy without "goodnight movies".

    Giovanni

Every Cumulative Update for Media Center will re-break playback until Microsoft fix ehplayer.dll. You can install the hotfixes, but you will need to repeat the ehplayer.dll replacement after.

I still can't see any problems with replacing ehplayer.dll, although I believe some people have issues with streaming to MC Extenders/XBOX360 not working correctly (neither of which I have).

Ok, thanks a lot. I will proceed installing the last 2 hotfixes first, then I will replace ehplayer manually. Hope Microsoft will fix it soon. It's a kind of annoying. Thanks again.

    Hi,

I believe I have the same problem. I am running Media Browser in VMC, but when trying to open an AVI film it just stops VMC. When I try a VOB film it works fine.

I have tried your work around steps, but no joy. Is there a step at the end to re-register the new ehplayer, or is there something else I am missing?

    Thanks
