According to this thread, this poor guy got redirected rather then have his question answered.

I have looked high and low, but of course Google's PageRank (and other search engines) favor old information over new up to date information.

So I have a HTPC, that has been running off of Standard Cable for some time.  My Girlfriend has DirecTV, and has been pushing me hard to stay away from Timewarner*!

I am planning on moving in with her and know I am going to need to buy new equipment (or switch to Timewarner* and upgrade to HD package).

So I want to capture HD TV, and do so with as many channels as I can.  What is my options, or where should I start to look for a capture card and/or satellite equipment.

*I must agree I have a distaste for Timewarner.  I live in Rochester and Timewarner tried to downcap our Internet by charging around $1 per one gig usage.  See Here and thank god for Eric Messa and please support his Bill in congress

After over 1 hour on the phone with DirecTV, I have found more information.  I have found some software for PC's.

It only plays back what is on the DVR (does not play Live satellite service).  It seems to be Cyberlink Software over the network, though I have not found a plug-in that works with it (anyone know of one).  Unfortunately for HTPC users who want to record TV from there PC's using DirectTV you are out of luck.  Also there is no way to schedule recordings via the software.

For me, this basically would mean I would ditch my old NTSC tunner and simply use my HTPC as a Internet based media center (Internet TV) and to play movies and music from my 5.5 TB server.  If I wanted to I could buy a ATSC tunner and then record local channels, but the inability to collaborate and play back recordings from multiple sources is not feasible. (You would have to switch back and forth from your Media Center to your DVR).

Tivo has been working hard to have a network based playback between multiple DVR's and multiple TV's.  So I have mentions of DirectTV + Tivo + Media Center Hack is a possibility, though I have no other information at this time.

Im hoping to find more information for Dish Network!

As for Timewarner, all I know is that the all local channels and some cable channels are supported via clearQAM.  I do not know of any integration with any of TimeWarner's DVR's, and I have no information on how to record extended HD channels with the exception of a HDTV capture card (which I hear about but have not seen).  Please share information on TimeWarner's HD record options for a HTPC.  I really do not like the idea of a IR-Blaster since this seems like more of a hack then a true integrated solution.
