I use the MS Standard Remote control RC118 for MCE on Windows Vista Ultimate 32. Some days ago, MCE or any other programs, that used to work with the RC, stopped reacting on the remote control. Interestingly, I still can start my computer with the RC, so the device works. But after the login, I can't use it anymore.
I'm not aware of any changes I made, such as installing new programs or else.
Does anybody have advice?
Hi,
Do you use a third party software to customize the remote?
You can also check if the HID Service is running (without this the remote will not work if you don't use a third party software).
Regards,
I don't use third party software, and hidserv is running.
Then I'm afraid your MCE receiver can be dead.
What you can try, if you remember the exact day it stopped working, is to use system restore to restore the state of the system to a day before it stopped working.
You can also install my software and see if you can get anything to display in the Live Trace Viewer (you can open this Live Trace Viewer from the taskbar notification icon) => it will show you if the remote is sending something or not and then you can uinstall it (install my software before using system restore, if my software cannot see anything then either the remote receiver is not working or something was changed on your system, in this case uninstall my software and try system restore)
I installed your software, but I can't see anything in the Live Trace Viewer.
As I still can use the remote control to start up the computer, I suppose the problem must be software-related. I don't have any useful restore points, so the last measure seems to be a complete system restorement.
Thanks for you assistance!
You can also check the following registry key : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\HidIr\Remotes\745a17a0-74d3-11d0-b6fe-00a0c90f57da (copy paste / here the whole content of this key: you can export it to a .reg file from within regedit.exe, the .reg file is a text file)
If your MCE receiver is a USB device and you can test it on another machine (XP Pro / XP MCE / Vista / Windows 7) do it : test the Volume Up / Volume Down button => these ones should work anywhere and you always see if they work or not.
I have an onboard Receiver.
This is the Key:
