I have been tryingto locate some info on this technology. I have read a few posts here about it.
My question lies in the overall connection of how to get this started. Im a little confused on how to use clear qam. I have my happauge 1600 media center installed on my Vista system with everything working normally. I have timewarner cable basic connected to the ATSC connection and a over the air antenna to pick up my HD channels which is just a few.
When I plug my cable line into my TV, I am able to get HD channels over the cable line on my TV with channels 3-1, 5-1, 8-1...respectively.
I guess what I am asking is Im not sure what I am missing here. I downloaded the Clear QAM plugin for VMC that Happauge release and I am able to scan for them within media center. But nothing. Do I plug in the normal cable line where the ver the air HD antenna goes?
Any clearance on this subject will be greatly appreciated or please post the link to the thread I have may missed.
Thanks Everyone,
Dan
I did notice that after using the Clear QAM plugin Happauge release it added about 40+ channels to the guide uder the HDTV category. But changing to those channels it had stated there was no data availible.
The install was pretty straight forward. I also have a VistaView tuner installed and both cards work great and I am able to record, change the channels etc. Just would love to enable that 3rd tuner via QAM and get more channels. Might have a possible 4th tuner if a plugin comes out fir it. They released a update to their driver for GB-PVR. Hopefully a VMC equivalent is in the works.
Sounds like we can try to help each other. :-)
Thats the exact setup I have as well. When I ran the scanner utility it found I beleive 48 channels. But none of them I was able to access and have them show up in liveTV.
Its just displays no data availble but the channels were there at the strongest signal possible.
Im at a stand still on what to do myself.
I believe I read somewhere, and anyone reading please correct me if im wrong, that the QAM utility tricks media center into thinking the QAM channels are ATSC channels (1000 +). I'm wondering if you are getting no signal because VMC is looking at your OTA ATSC tuner and not getting any data from the QAM channels (obviously) and giving you an empty screen. Which brings me to my original question; is 1 ATSC QAM tuner and 1 ATSC OTA tuner even possible because of this issue. For me, I will be happy with 2 NTSC and 1 QAM, but if possible I would like the 'works'.
I'm almost thinking I may take out my current dual tuner, install the 1600, run the QAM utility (hopefully being able to tune the channels), then reinstall my old dual tuner and see if that changes the 'priority' on the ATSC tuners. Again, all speculation so hop in anyone who is in the know...
regardless, im going home in 2 hours and seeing what damage i can do!!
I did do this. I did a fresh install of windows and tried just to setup the 1600 by itself. I had a coaxial cable from my cable plugged into the 1600 split, one atsc and one to the ntsc.
But by all means try it yourself and see if you get better results. I just don't know the "trick" or "sequence" to get this stuff working.
Please post your results if you figure it out.
MrBungle:Any luck MJP?
Well I didn't get as much time as I would have liked to do everything. But I did install the board and the released drivers (non QAM). I was able to tune some QAM channels via WinTV, which confirmed the signal and card functionality. Then with the new TV Pack being out I installed that to see if VMC would detect the QAM tuner on its own and I would be happy. To my dismay VMC detected my two NTSC tuners, both ATSC tuners as digital OTA even though I had my cable line connected to the ATSC tuner on the 1600. At this point I ran out of time so I restored my system to pre-TV Pack and that was as far as I got.
A few unanswered questions/ideas I have:
1) after playing with the TV Pack installed I realized the cables i made to split my signal were not working, static... so I'm wondering if that stopped VMC from detecting the QAM signal.
2) I haven't installed the beta QAM drivers so I don't know if that will make a difference with the TV Pack or not.
3) If fixing the cables and installing the QAM drivers doesnt work with the TV Pack I'm going to restore again and try the QAM plugin and see where that gets me.
Any and all please comment....
TV pack? Hmm..did I miss something?

this should give you all you need to know. I think the link to download is in there somewhere. I installed it on top of my current system without issue, so you dont have to do a complete reinstall. However, since its leaked without proper documentation... procede at your own risk...
Thanks for the info. It appears M$ will be releasing this sometime in Sept or Oct as an official release? although not certain.
Im gonna try sometime. Just not sure if its worth the effort. I mean my system works great now other that the antenna. I would love this working though....
