Thank again for the help for info on Extenders. (previous post)

The next question I have is what codecs have you used that you know always (!!!!!) work.  I don't mind converting files.  I want to convert my dvds to media files and before I begin that process I want to insure that whatever choice I make is the least headache.  (Yes I know at this point nothing is guarenteed, but I can hope)

Also, if this is the wrong section I appologize.

    Peace,
    James

always work = dvrms or wtv for TV Pack and Win7.

Speaking from experience, dont forget to test everything out before you start doing a bulk conversion.

Since no one has figured out .wvt yet, that leaves you with only dvrms.

So far on my DMA2100s, dvrms, wmv and xvid work flawless. Divx files so far have worked flawless, too, if I change the 4CC to xvid first, which opposed to transcoding files takes but a couple of seconds. Also, with the latest firmware, xvid files seem to start faster than before.

I guess I should have orignally added this:

The codec I want should be able to fast-forward, pause, etc without any issues, and with the specificed extender (I believe I'm gonna pick up the 2200)

In that case, Xvid/Divx needs to be ruled out. This format doesn't support fast-forward/rewind. It supports 30s skip forward and 8s skip back, though. I don't do a lot of wmv files, but if I remember correctly it does support fast-forward/rewind. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong. Pause works with anything that plays on the extender. dvr-ms is pretty much the best format and supports everything. For the occasional DVD I need to rip, I always mux the main feature to dvr-ms using VideoReDo.

    I'm doing the same thing.

I agree that in theory that dvr-ms is the best, however, whenever I convert a DVD using quick stream fix and video redo, when I play on the extender the image jitters.  I have posted to Video Redo's forums and got that this is a known problem and "should be fixed in the next release" but the work aorund requires the file to be re-encoded.  However I tried 6 months ago and again this week and the problem is still there.

Same problem with Vista and Win7, using DMA2100.

For full disclosure I am using the trial of Video Redo as I cannot bring myself to purchase with this problem.

Love to hear what I am doing wrong as no one else seems to have this issue.

I've seen this once so far when trying to rip WALL-E. In this case I just ripped it to mpg. I don't really care if I can't fast-forward/rewind in a ripped movie. There are no commercials in there after all. The skip/replay is plenty for those moments where I missed something because my spouse talked over it.

Am I to understand that if I use the wmv format I could have forward/reverse/skip/etc?

My pref is to keep videos in some sort of standard format.  (I need to read up on the dvr-ms format)

Yes, I just double-checked and wmv does support forward/reverse/skip/etc.

I believe DVR-MS is the ONLY format that will work flawlessly on 2100/2200 extenders.  You get pause, skip forward/back and FF/RW with no problems.  Works 100% of the time on my extenders.  VideoReDo is the product I use to create DVR-MS.  I don't have to, but I do, shrink files first with DVD Shrink.

Thanks people.  I think I will be getting an extender in two weeks.  I really appreciate the help.

Hello gang, Time Warner came by today and gave me wireless (with an .11G... G? now I have to go buy an "N", but I digress) I was able to pick up a Linksys 2200 for $140 and it connected to my Win7 system fine (except for the lack of N speed, of course) The next step, as defined by the original post, is to convert my dvd collection into a format the extender can read. It seems that DVR-MS is most likely my best candidate. I checked out forums here and elsewhere and most often the player to use is VideoReDo. However when I put in my West Wing DVD it said it was copyrighted (duh) and wont convert it. Is there any software that can do this as one step? Or do I have to use another software to create a middle codec that VideoReDo can read... etc etc. Thanks, James
