So, I guess it's gone public about NBC airing their content with Silverlight but what does this mean for Media Center users?

    Here is the interview:

Can I get an answer here? I really would enjoy watching some sports that won't get coverage as much as I would like.

     Thanks!

Maybe I misunderstand what was said in the interview, but as I understand it, there's no effect at all to MCE users.

This is simply additional content available from NBC's website.

Since it's not television per se, I don't see where MCE would be involved; you simply view the streaming video on-line via NBC's website.

Your operating system or browser should be able to do it without Media Center.

If your configuration allows you to view internet streaming video on your television, you would just display in on your screen like you would any other internet content.  Treat it as you would anything from You Tube, Hulu or any other Internet video source.

If you're referring to the ability to schedule or record, I don't think that should be necessary if the content is available "on-demand".  If you do want to record and save the content you could use any of a number of utilities or plug-ins that do that, such as "Download Helper" or the dozens of others that are available.

    Here's what's wrong with it: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/02/12/AR2010021205869.html

I ditched Comcast for video because after all of the fanfare of how Comcast users wouldn't need boxes to get OTA during the cutover to digital not a month later they required every TV to use a digital set-top box (and they were LAME!!!!). The boxes actually dumbed down the capabilities of my TV. So now because I don't pay Comcast for video I can't some of the Olympic events. That sounds like it's all about the sport!

I'm in the same time zone as the Olympics as yet while all of the live events are going on I have to wait until the evening to watch recaps and snippets. This is utter crap. I realize they have to make money and I don't mind watching the ads they add into the streams. I just want the coveage to be available while the events unfold showing the entire event. I realize that putting it on MCE doesn't solve that problem but I think if the IOC didn't sell exclusive rights to one network it would spur competition and we'd see more outlets (like mulltiple internet channels available on MCE).

Also let's not forget about the 10 foot experience. You don't get that clicking away with your mouse on a computer screen.

OK, we're obviously talking about two entirely different things...

I just went back and re-watched the video you provided in your first post.

When I watched it a few days back when you first posted it, I didn't realize the video was three years old and was related to the Bejing Olympics in '98...  ...that has nothing to do with anything current.

So, now it appears you're wanting to watch cable content, but don't have cable?

And the second link you provided seems to say that NBC is now blowing off all of their OTA viewers?

I spent a couple of thousand putting a 30 ft tower on the roof of my house (co-phased directional HD Antennas about 60' off the ground, just to be able to receive flawless OTA Signals from the rural area I live in (no cable available out here in the boonies back then.

Now I've got Charter 10 meg too.

This computer now has 5 tuner cards, three on cable and two still on OTA.

From what you say, NBC wouldn't let me access their website if i wasn't a cable customer.

Sounds to me that the 100,000,000 or so folks that live in urban areas and still get their tv OTA are going to be pissed.

I guess that's what happens when a cable company buys a network.

...got a friend with cable who's not into the olympics?    ...borrow their account #

My first post? Take a look at the names. Smile

NBC isn't killing OTA altogether. They ARE limiting access to certain content that they only provide to cable channels so you have to prove you have a subscription that includes the channel.

Last Olympics you could get all of the content via TVTonic in WMC. That appears to be dead now. Too bad. It was a great service.

I have an antenna and get crystal clear OTA as well. I'm just pissed that they are providing meager coverage via OTA. I guess it's time to go torrent. I'm sure someone's uploaded coverage without commercials. The suits will never learn...

I was questioning whether or not the InternetTV included plug-in with Media center was going to have the Olympics instead of having to watch it through a browser.

I can't imagine it would be hard to add this and it would bring more money to the joint venture of Microsoft and NBC
