I have a Windows Home server that has been working flawlessly for the past 8-10 months. This weekend I added a Windows 7 pc. I thought I should update my WHS to PP3 so my Win7/MCE would work properly. I hae dont every single update to WHS and it still won't update to PP3. It doesn't even show up as an option to download.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this issue??
Thanks,
Eric
Eric - I had a similar problem with my Windows Home Server. I tried several times to install the PP3 from the WHS console and it failed each time. I was finally successful with the following:
Gain access to the WHS via remote desktop.
From a command prompt - enter the following commands:
windowsserver2003.windowsxp-kb969949-x86-enu.exe /z /u
whs-kb968349-v1-x86-enu.exe /forcerestart
I searched for the files above - but didn't have any success. I looked in the WindowsUpdate.log in the \windows directory on my WHS and found the links below (referencing the updates). I downloaded both of these and renamed to match the names above.

Hope that helps you - I struggled for several evenings before finally getting it updated.

Thanks for the quick reply. I will try this fix as soon as I get home tonight.
I just installed as you suggested. I will post the results after the reboot. It will be awhile before I can reboot the server.
I have tried following the steps listed above and I am still not able to get the power pack installed.
For that matter no patches or security updates will install on my home server. Any suggestions?
The Windows Updates show as starting to install then go right to failed.
I would really like to get the power pack installed so I can start backing up my windows 7 machines on the network.
Thanks for any suggestions.
Scott
I forgot to update my post. I tried following the steps above and it didn't work. As is stands, right now, I still have PP2.
Eric - not sure where to point you next? If the downloads installed correctly from the steps I posted, you should have PP3 (the last download is PP3).
I guess you have rebooted WHS?
Todd
Yep, I rebooted the server. I have more time tonight to look into it. I plan on sitting down and working on this until it's figured out. I will try to reinstall the steps you suggested to make sure nothing went haywire.
Thanks again for the help, I really appreciate it.
I was having the same problem with PP3
Had to install windows search 4. (needed to manually uninstall version 3 would not automatically remove)
After this it allowed me to install PP3 from windows updates.
I still had no luck. I will try to install windows search 4. I will have to make sure it's not already installed, but I will have to wait until after work.
thanks for a great suggestion!
